2.4L NA with K&N Typhoon Experience!

The purpose of this thread is for those having the K&N Typhoon SRI INSTALLED on their 2.4L NA SS to document their experiences; including installation, performance, sound, mileage, DYNO results, racing (track/strip) results, etc.

I ordered from http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...rod=69-4517TTK. Received the kit in about 4 business days.

Installation of the K&N Typhoon was very easy.... removing the standard air box was the hardest part since I don't have a lot of metric tools. The removal and install took maybe an hour total as I had numerous interuptions while I was working.

You do NOT have to remove the "air silencer" which is inside the wheel well panel and behind the passenger side headlight! The Typhoon is installed as a SHORT RAM with a heat shield.

The "Drive" test: Throttle response is improved. When you go WOT, everyone HEARS IT!... great big low growl that gets louder as the engine winds up. Accelleration improved.... the 55MPH "passing" accelleration is awesome as the automatic transmission kicks down on WOT and the engine wails as it winds up heading to 80 MPH!

Partial throttle acelleration is quiter... it seems like less throttle is required for the same or slightly better speed increase.

More Mustangs want to play!

Here are the installation pictures at: http://www.csm-gh.com/AB9M-2007%20Cobalt%20SS.htm

The sound of a new cold air or short ram intake is just enough for me to be happy with my purchase (the gmpp one).

IF there's someone going slow in front of me, they'll hear me rev my engine brrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooommmmmm, some get out of the way, some speed up

it's definitely audible and beautiful

Just for reference here is a direct link to the product, and will save members a bit of $ than ordering direct with K&N:

We have around 12 in stock

At 55 MPH, full throttle with the automatic results in a downshift into second right into the upper part of the powerband where the advertised gain of 15.94 HP @ 5900 RPM is... winding out to shift into third at 70 plus MPH!

I've had mine on for a week now, the only bad thing is this week I got the GMPP exhaust and I can't hear the exhaust over the intake roar above 3000 rpms.

Question The Roar!

I've found that I have to control the noise level by taking it easy on the throttle when the police are nearby or while in residential areas. Gas mileage has improved as the result of "taking it easy". On the other hand gas mileage plummets to 22 MPG when doing WOT starts for Mustangs at stoplights!

What's your perception of the K&N claimed 15.94 HP increase realizing that you also added the GMPP exhaust?.... Are you going to have Strip or Dyno slip results?

My gas mileage plummets to 2 mpg when doing WOT starts, and I'm stock.

I could be very wrong, but I believe our DIC is very relative, it depends how many miles you've driven since you last reset it as to how much any single action will change it. I would think it has like a 3-500 mile limit on what it tracks though.

I don't know if it feels like 15.94 whp, with just the intake. When I did a pulley swap on my GTP I felt a lot more kick in the pants and that should have been about +20 whp (maybe a little more), but I suspect the increase in torque might have also been greater on that car. I just got the exhaust yesterday and I was a little disapointed that between the the two it only felt a little faster. Today, however, I noticed I 've been driving with AC on the whole time..so I guess I can say between the two it still feels faster than stock even with the AC on.

Just put on my new AEM cold air.
Makes me smile every time i punch it. 5000 rpm in 2nd guear may be the best tone I've heard out of any 4 banger I've ever seen. I think more people should try this kit out.

K&N has the highest claimed HP gain of 15.94 HP with the Typhoon Short Ram designed specifically for the 2.4L with VVT. Their dyno chart is with "the hood closed".
With the heat shield in place, there is a lot of air being pulled (240 CFM at redline) in from cool places. While you might seal it and mod for cold air, resonance and restriction losses are going to be greater than the calculated gain of denser, colder air in a NA VVT environment.

Prices vary, probably highest direct from K&N. Seems like one of the distributors here was charging something around $220-$240.

You know, i previously owned a Fujita CAI and i had to return it because it kept giving CEL's. i now purchased, for $200.90 shipped, the K&N and installed it today. What a difference in sound. I guess the HP is better and K&N claims its to the wheels, but i dont have a dyno to get it tested. I would reccomend this unit to anyone look for some screams. A buddy of mine who drives a tarus though the noise coming from my intake was my Exhaust, thats how loud it is. Thought i had a Rice burner muffler on. I notice some different rumbles out of the exhaust after i installed the unit and gas it in park. All around i say WTG K&N.

I heard with some intakes you have to take them off during the winter? I've also heard that no you do not have to take them off. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Is this intake really worth 16whp?
