View Full Version : Top Speed 2006 Yellow CobaltSS 10-23-2005, 07:37 PM What is the top speed of Cobalt SS ( no supercharger) avro206 10-23-2005, 07:47 PM less then 130mph (210km/h) The tire rating is for that speed. So the limit could be that exactly or a few less. My wifes GAGT came with V rated tires but is limited to 126mph (not like it would go much faster anyways) Hopefully a mainstream car magazine will test one soon. Car and Driver does a top speed test on every car. As much as a I like going fast---thats one big fine! averagewhiteboy 10-24-2005, 12:40 AM That's kinda funny...lol. When I had my Accord ('93 EX 5 speed), I hit 140. lol. * shrugs * Damn new fangled OBD and controllers. lol. avro206 10-24-2005, 12:49 AM That's kinda funny...lol. When I had my Accord ('93 EX 5 speed), I hit 140. lol. * shrugs * Damn new fangled OBD and controllers. lol. speedo error gets bad at high speeds. Your speedo may have indicated 140mph but that does not make it true. Thats why Police cars have certified, calibrated speedos. I would suggest that it is impossible for a Honda Accord 4 cly making less then 150hp to hit 140mph. Okay--I am not suggesting it---its impossible. Unless you had a 100hp shot of nitrous Radar gun is the only way to go. People do not realize how much areodynmic forces increase and how you need alot of hp to overcome increasing forces at high speeds. MarcS 10-24-2005, 12:59 AM speedo error gets bad at high speeds. R33P3R007 10-24-2005, 11:41 AM yeah like your gps, 276 mph or sumthin like that averagewhiteboy 10-24-2005, 12:39 PM Regardless. It wasn't much slower than this car. And my car didn't have VTEC thank you very much. mcphatty 10-24-2005, 12:55 PM yeah like your gps, 276 mph or sumthin like that hey dont be jealous cause my cobalt goes 276mph! BLKSS 10-24-2005, 01:30 PM I don't know about you guys but i braught mine up to 215km/h and there was still lots of room. Im guessing 242km/h 97cavie24ls 10-24-2005, 04:51 PM the accord my ex g/f had it was lucky if it toped 120 it was the efi 5spd , early 90's model it was all stock , and it wouldnt pull any faster BullDog71ss 10-24-2005, 04:56 PM One good thing about the SS/SC is that they have very accurate speedos even when passed 140. A guy on another forum I go to used a calculation on what's his names vid going 147. It turned out that the actual speed was 145. 2 mph off is very pretty good. R33P3R007 10-24-2005, 05:25 PM I had my SS 2.0 upto 140 by the speedo. I decided I wanted to live at that point and since i was on I-95 I decided to slow up. But it is nice knowing I could do it again if I had to. (can't think of any good reasons why) MikeSS 10-24-2005, 06:39 PM I had my SS 2.0 upto 140 by the speedo. I decided I wanted to live at that point and since i was on I-95 I decided to slow up. But it is nice knowing I could do it again if I had to. (can't think of any good reasons why) Running away from a 130MPH Dinosaur.......it COULD happen  mcphatty 10-24-2005, 06:58 PM running from a 130 mph cop? haha brentil 10-24-2005, 09:10 PM Solstice tops out about 125 MPH due to it's very large coefficient of drag. I'd expect the Cobalt to get a bit more out of it then that. It really depends on the 5th gears gearing too. HP really doesn't limit top speed as much as how your 5th gear is sized and your aerodynamics. NYBOWTIEBOY 10-25-2005, 02:07 PM So far I got the SS Sedan up to 119mph. on the Brooklyn/Queens Expressway coming home from Manhattan. It still had more to go, maybe 15-20 tops. mcphatty 10-25-2005, 02:27 PM my gps says 140.7 is the top speed, and that was on a 5 mile straightaway with no cars. i was riding at 140 for about a mile before i cut the engine. although, i've hit 150 (by speedo) going down a hill with a tailwind. phxSS 10-26-2005, 03:22 AM Mine does like 182mph MajesticOne 11-16-2005, 07:22 AM Ok I guess I'm the first to try in the SS, but if anyone else does this please let me know WTF. I went to see how she felt in three digit speeds, but I hit 100 and shifted into fifth and then the car would not go any faster. It isn't like it didnt have the power or the transmission (it was only 4K RPM) to go any further, but it seemed like a new technology that just would not let fifth go any faster in 100+mph. I then tried it again later that day and I kept in fouth a little longer and hit 117mph and shifted and the same thing happen, nothing. It is really weird. FYI: This is was done both times on a road were there was no other cars and was really straight, and the only person that could of got hurt was me. celicacobalt 11-16-2005, 10:59 AM wow i wonder what will happen on my auto avro206 11-16-2005, 11:39 AM All this talk got me to attempt some high speeds. I hit just over 190km/h (about 120mph) I was in 5th car was still accelerating----(felt very stable) but then I backed off-----it was dark and was really over srving my headlights. The tire speed rating would mandate thats it goverened at or less then 130mph. Wish there was a place I could do top speed legally :red: swatthefly 11-16-2005, 02:21 PM Mine does like 182mph uh... ok? celicacobalt 11-16-2005, 03:41 PM yeah if they want us to get off the streets with our racing they need to give us racers more than a strip to play on we need twisties and long straightaways that dont cost $150 (butler in my area) and then we will stop Python467 11-16-2005, 08:38 PM ive had my 2.4 105 Brian MP5T 11-16-2005, 08:43 PM hey dont be jealous cause my cobalt goes 276mph! Perhaps only in free fall if it's driven off a cliff.. celicacobalt 11-17-2005, 12:26 PM lol good one 06CobaltSSSedan 01-19-2006, 01:28 AM As of today on an empty 3 lane highway I got my 2.4 Automatic SS Sedan up to 121. At about 110 it shifted into the final gear. At 121 I was at aprox 43-4400 rpm's. Im not gonna lie but it really didnt seem like the car was going to go much faster... Maybe AT MOST 5 MPH more. That was it. I know that there was plenty of room left on the tach, but as someone stated earlier it seems like the govenor REALLY kicks in and thats all she wrote home to mom... MikeSS 01-19-2006, 10:15 AM I got my car up to 200km/h (like 121mph or so) and backed off. averagewhiteboy 01-19-2006, 12:58 PM After 120, it's pretty damn fast anyway in a small car. That's what I liked about my manual Accord from 93. Pre-OBD-2 and the 5th gear was more than just a gas saver. It actually still gained speed. The Cobalts new style governor obviously is just for gas mileage conservation. The Cobalts seem to get to about 80 really fast, then die down. At least the 2.4 auto. My Monte too though. It gets there REALLY fast, then dies. Just a slight observation. I haven't tried to go any faster than 80 in the Cobalt, and 90 in the Monte. The Accord was the 100+ beast. : P Dark-Fx 01-19-2006, 01:49 PM I've been up to about 120 in my SS/SC, and it was still pulling pretty good. I got out of it because the road surface wasn't suitable for going that fast. Shades_74 01-19-2006, 01:50 PM just curious to see how many ss/sc owners have hit the top speed ? I tried once , car had power to 245 km then it was a slow pull to 255km then i backed off the gas because i didnt want to rev my engine for to long with only 3000 km on it. P.S. my car is all stock and I was by myself and on a straight section of a 4 lane highway with no trafic (4 am ) the only thing i could hurt was myself and maybe a deer. 2.4ss 01-22-2006, 09:09 PM I had my 2.4 up to 132 according to the police radar gun. OUCH chillfactor 01-22-2006, 09:26 PM iv had my 05 cobalt ls up to 125 on the way to atlantic city but when i was in fith it didnt seem to go any were chillfactor 01-22-2006, 09:27 PM u think even with my exaust nd intake it will go ne faster or is it the gear ratio thats slowing me down in 5th RaineMan 01-22-2006, 10:27 PM more HP can mean more top speed.... but it's more gear ratio than anything... you might get 1 or 2 MPH.... uti0026 01-25-2006, 07:09 PM i got my 2006 cobalt ss non supercharged up to 139-140 so i think 130 is a little low stlurbanpunk 01-26-2006, 01:15 AM i got my 2006 cobalt ss non supercharged up to 139-140 so i think 130 is a little low holy shit! r u kidding?! that is hella fast compared to my current death box. jarednut4ever 04-17-2006, 08:41 PM I have had my 06 ss up to 130 and let me tell u after 110 oh my god it crawls. I think that 130-133 would be all shes got. Seemed like past 129-130 it was pretty much topped out. 2K5SS/SC? 04-17-2006, 08:50 PM I got up to and past 140 rather quick with the new power adder. Blown 4-banger 04-18-2006, 08:33 PM I have an ss/sc and I wanted to see how fast it would go, when I got up to around 120 or so the road and everything are moving so fast you have like no time to respond, and all the little hills in the road feel like going over speed bumps, and its just scary when you look at the white lines in the road and they look like 1 flashing solid line, I chickened out at about 125. kadumel 04-18-2006, 08:40 PM I hate to tell you guys but I can guarentee its over 127 because mine came with Z-rated tires (edit : I will take pics of this too)and Saturday night I was racing a 5.0 and got to 125 in fourth still climbing. You get a higher speed in fourth then you do in fifth which is why you stopped gaining in fifth. If you guys want pics I will ask someone with a camera to ride with me tonight and do it. I am kind of the old guy on this site, I have not seen dotted lines go solid at 120 mph. Perhaps you were closer to 170 mph and did not realize it ??? J/K , No disrespect meant but perhaps you should keep it under a 100 for a couple of years. S. Xenozx 04-19-2006, 10:51 PM my 2.0 SS/SC was going 148 mph neck and neck with my brothers ION redline. This is per the tach though. Your flying by cars so fast its like they are standing still. We did this on a 4 lane highway with very light traffic. It was the only time ive been up that high. I still had room on the RPMS too, just wasnt going any faster. CarissasCobalt 04-19-2006, 11:01 PM I have an SS (not SC) and I've only brought her to 100... I'm scared to go any faster cuz I don't want to get pulled over... sure is a rush tho... Well I'v noticed that the lines in the road vary in distance apart based on speed limit, at least in AZ, I did it on a freeway frontage road, with a posted speed limit of 45, so the lines were spaced acordingly. Lines in the freeway are farther apart, so it just looks faster on a lower speed limit road (not a bad idea) l337m4573rpyr0 04-20-2006, 01:54 AM i have toped it out at 130 but my arm and ear got sore from my wife hitting me and yelling at me to slow down ... My GF likes it when I drive fast. Tomtwtwtw 04-20-2006, 02:00 AM Well I'v noticed that the lines in the road vary in distance apart based on speed limit, at least in AZ, I did it on a freeway frontage road, with a posted speed limit of 45, so the lines were spaced acordingly. I took mine to 120 there too. :twothumbs If price road is the name of the frontage road along the 101 then yes. I did it from ray to warner, the road gets pretty bumpy and scary at that speed, plus if a cop pulled me over going that fast he wouldn't even ask for my license and registraion, he'd just KILL ME!!! kadumel 04-20-2006, 10:56 PM well since the 2.4 ss comes with z rated tires, at least mine did, then you can go like 180+ on them.... but im pretty sure its around the top of hte speedo without an acu tune Actually Z rated tires are rated up to 157 if I am not correct... Distortedcloud 07-28-2006, 05:09 PM I've had my ford exploder up to 110mph (178km/h), it wouldn't go must faster. For being 4000 lbs going that fast, pretty impressive I think, anyway. That was my need for speed for a while. Unless I'm in my buddies stealth. steddy2112 07-30-2006, 01:06 PM Lol, I have driven a few things kinda fast THe 130MPH rev limiter has been hit in the SS, as a matter of fact, on the way to work this morning, shhhhh its a secret;) I once took my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 to 125+(speedo stops after 125) to make a Civic Si feel really stupid...but i was pretty stupid for doing that lol anyways....I had an old 92 Eagle Talon DL (92hp baby w00t!) and had it to 130mph as well...took MINUTES to get there...lol -Steddy avro206 07-30-2006, 07:03 PM Lol, I have driven a few things kinda fast THe 130MPH rev limiter has been hit in the SS, as a matter of fact, on the way to work this morning, shhhhh its a secret;) I once took my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 to 125+(speedo stops after 125) to make a Civic Si feel really stupid...but i was pretty stupid for doing that lol anyways....I had an old 92 Eagle Talon DL (92hp baby w00t!) and had it to 130mph as well...took MINUTES to get there...lol -Steddy thanks for testing that.
