Removing Rear Air Dam

I would like to remove the rear air dam, it looks hideous.

I know at least one person has done this on here.
Are there any disadvantages to this?
What would be involved in removing this? Just a couple of bolts?

thought it was that, ya that thing does look nasty, isnt it just a guard for the spare and fuel tank?

^^ it might be that. for the people who cannot judge curbs when backing up. better to crunch plastic then a fuel tank

not sure, i didnt feel like crawling on the ground..i was hoping someone else would do the dirty work lol

edit: BlueSS ^^^ Was right, the piece of plastic is a guard for the fuel tank, if you take it off, you'll see bare metal, which looks even worse. Might not look quite as bad if you could polish it up a little, I think I'll keep the plastic on!

Or its a cover for the spare tire area since the fuel tank sits in front of the rear axle... just a thought!

At least the tank is in front of the axle on the HHRs anyway. Better weight ratio?! NOPE! LOL!

whatever it is, its a large metal tank that goes as low as the rear dam and extends up to about 1/2 way between the front and rear axles. I didn't see any other "tanks" so I'm gonna guess this was the gas tank, maybe it was both, gas up front, spare tire in the back section?

edit: Cool HHR Jason...I concidered one myself but in the end, the HHR is heavier and taller (slower and bad body roll) otherwise it's a nice vehicle, tons of trunk space
