Handling IS everything.
Handling IS everything.
That Scirocco looks like the 16V version I bought new in '88. It was a good handling car as it had been refined for many years. Engine rated at 126HP, 1800cc, not much torque and car weighed about 2200lbs if I remember correctly.
But I don't think a stock version could do much against a SS/SC. I know the VW would get pounded in the 1/4, stock times were in the 15-16 range.
Having owned both cars I'd say the SS/SC might pull more Gs on the skidpad but VW would be close and was much more flickable and responsive cause of the much lighter weight.
But a modded Scirocco would probably eat a SS/SC alive.
Just my opinion.

That SS couldn't catch me on a 21-speed bike going around those corners on the inside. I'm sure that Volkswagen handles well, but regardless the only reason it won was because the length of the track was much shorter for it than it was for the Balt.
LOL redneck circle racing.
At any rate, yeah, that's not an "even" race by any means. If they really wanted to get a true feel for performance they'd do one lap then swap positions between the cars so that the inside car goes to the outside and the outside car goes to the inside. Lowest combined time wins.

Those cars can really handle well, and a lot of that has to do with weight. Straight line the SS will obviously destroy but on a shorter course, the VW will probably beat the SS due to its grip, weight and overall nimbleness.
I agree with the Doc. I went to an auto-x last weekend with a few friends. A buddy of mine owns a 84 VW Rabbit with the 74 hp motor. The Scirocco is basically the same chasis as the Rabbit but with a much more powerful motor. Point being, that Rabbit handed me my ass. I couldn't get within 1 second of its times with 3 times the hp!

I just got back from the bookstore where one of the books I looked at was VW history. Turns out that what I quoted earlier was close, the 16V Scirocco weighed 2260 lbs. That's about 600 lbs lighter than an SS/SC, makes a huge difference in cornering.
I had bought a new '84 Rabbit GTI which I later traded for my '88 16V Scirocco. That thing only weighed one ton and handled better than the scirocco. I'm not surprised that the one you saw does well in autoX, I sure wish I could find a GTI like the one I had.
Actually, what I should do is find a '83-84 GTI, build it up to about 200HP and kick some Cobalt ass!
