Does anyone else think that the Cobalt coupe should have been a hatchback?

Similar to the MK IV supras, or the FD RX7's?

I think it would have made alot more sense, could have kept the same profile, and not had a dinky little trunk opening. I wish they would have. My $0.02.

If they did go hatchback, I would expect another 200-300lbs added to the weight of the car... plus less rigidity, so no I think it's best as a coupe.

Hatch would have been nice. That small trunk opening is so lame! Its a HUGE trunk but ya cant fit anything through that small area.

I think they should have done both but i think that i would have bought the coupe anyway for the increased wieght and decreased strength of the hatch,
Maybe someone good with photoshop could make a hatch?

One of the things I don't like about the cobalt is the small truck opening. If it were a hatchback, I would be mucho happy!! I don't really care about the extra weight since I don't race or anything like that. It would've been cool if Chevy made a 2 door and 3 door coupe (3rd door being the hatchback).

I like the Wagon Cavy's. Maybe, Just maybe, A WagoBalt would look nice. As long as they put a good size engine in it. And a Tachometer. Unlike the FocusWagon Which is an Automatic w/ no Tach.

Well personally I really like the way the Cobalt SS S/C looks as a Coupe.

To get an idea of what the Cobalt would look like as a hatch, check out the pic below. Its the new Opel Astra, based on the Delta platform, same as the Cobalt, Ion, and HHR. Rumor is Saturn will be adopting some of the styling cues from Opel for their future vehicles, which would be awesome. The new Saturn Aura is the first vehicle adopting the Opel styling.

Sorry about the size

I'm kinda of agreeing with everyone else, I would love to see it in a hatchback, cause you cant **** through that small opening of the trunk or through the back seat. I can hardly get my goalie equipment bag in the trunk.

A larger trunk opening would solve part of your problem. The Cobalts opening is small.

My Dads 02 Civic has a much larger opening--although the trunk isn't as big.

My last car was a hatch---I am glad I have a trunk.

NOnono not Ford Focus hatchback... Fast-back... 300zx, 1g & 2g DSMs, Supra, Vette, Camaro, RSX... that style.... It wouldn't would add much wieght, but the rear storage would have been way more usful... And I think they already look that way stock... one person was actually suprised that I even had a trunk back there, lol.

I thought that too when I got my car home the first day and looked at it. A hatch similar to the Integra. The trunk opening is rediculous.

I don't understand ---a Camaro and Corvette are hatchbacks. Whats a fastback? Isn't the Coblat coupe one? Its no sedan. Please enlighten with a definition

A fast back is like an Integra, Firebird, things like that. The "trunk" lid, and glass come up as one piece. Sorta like a hatchback, but it doesn't look like a van. It just looks like a normal car but with really angled rear glass.

Basically, for a car to be a hatchback, the rear needs to open as one unit or as a glass hatch, allowing access to the rear interior of the vehicle.

Therefore the Cobalt Coupe isn't a hatchback, because the rear glass doesn't open with the trunk, and the trunk isn't part of the rest of the interior (unless you fold the rear seat).

A fastback would be like the older Mustangs, where the trunk is flush with the back of the car and extends upwards to the rear glass. It flows with the back of the car, as opposed to having an angle where the rear glass meets up with the horizontal trunk lid.

Hope that helps some

Wow, can you ever see the similarities between the Cobalt and the Astra in the lines of the doors and windows, and the headlights... nice find.

I love my 'balt just the way it is. I've never seen a hatcback that I liked. I don't know what the bias is, I just don't like them. I don't use my Cobalt to haul around furniture so I don't need a huge trunk opening.

Good discussion so far. Yes, I mean in the style of a 91 era integra, 1g and 2g talons, etc. Not the Mazda 3 sport, or protege 5, Where it would still maintain the same lines and body shape as it currently has, but the hinges for the trunk would be at the top of the rear glass. It would add more weight (I'm thinking about 100 lbs max), and would be slightly less stable (which would be a downer) but for the majority of the people that use it for everyday grocery getter and going to hockey practice, it would make sense to be able to get better access to that huge trunk space.

You can barely get a medium sized cooler into it. Maybe if they had made the base and LS coupe a hatch, and then the SS a coupe (in the same form it is now). They could have promoted it as a coupe for reduced weight and more rigidity. I would have enjoyed it if the coupe was a hatch, and several of my friends have commented that they thought it would be a hatch with the small trunk openning that it has.

I think that it would've been an interesting idea to release a Cobalt hatchback and convertible as well as the coupe and sedan. I miss the Cavalier hatchbacks since they were done away with in 1987... i have always liked hatchbacks, but the Cobalt has a nice look in the ass. In fact, the first time I saw a picture of the car, I thought it might be a hatchback.

Anyways, like it or not, coupe or sedan and that's it. Wasn't there someone on here who had said that a convertible was in the works?
