View Full Version : YOUR input on the garret alpha kit
mkulrey13 09-16-2007, 08:37 PM Just wondering what you guys thought of the alpha kit that garret sells for my 2.2L eco. Im seriously thinking about stop toying with my car with pointless mods (ss/sc front, painted headlights and such) and buy this kit. I was considering trading in my sedan for something else but got thinking that i've never seen another modded sedan anywhere, well besides this website. That changed my mind on keeping it.
What im worried about, is the no-named parts with this kit or any part with this kit. I dont want it to rust out or the turbo fail on me. This car is my daily driver, but with my brother gone to college, i do have a 2nd car to use. Any input from anyone with this kit would be awesome too. If i do decide to go this route, i will be parting out with alot of useless items so keep an eye out :)
Cliff Notes:
How reliable is this kit?
Will these parts rust any faster then stock piping?
Im new to turbos, This kit shouldn't be too difficult to install with basic knowledge?
Anything else that would help?
CobaltPerformanceParts 09-16-2007, 08:42 PM Well I can tell you one thing. Garrett is not a no name company at all. They have carefully chosen the parts for the kit and have done tons and tons of research on the install. They have tested it on many track cars. Garrett is the largest turbo manufacture and I'm sure they wouldn't want to hurt there rep by putting together a bunch of junk! The kit is complete. Its has everything you need to install as well as a full instructions. Everything is made to fit perfectly. It bolts up to your stock exhaust so the rust factor is not a issue. The turbo manifold is made out of cast and will not rust out also.
If you have any other questions or concerns feel free to pm us about it. We have sold several units now and we have heard nothing but good feed back.
Here is a link to the kits as well as a pic of it.

articzap 09-16-2007, 08:45 PM What he said. Garrett is to well known to sell junk or want to blow up your car.
mkulrey13 09-16-2007, 08:47 PM Thanks guys, im not talking the whole kit, jsut the small peices of it, piping cooler and such. what vendors sell this kit?
skymynx 09-16-2007, 08:47 PM Like stated above Garrett is a well known and well documented company that proforms very good. i'd say save up and get it. hell depending on where you are in NH i'd come help you install it, plus SMG autosports might be close enough to you where you can go to them for your tuning. they are excellent tuners, and you wont believe how much you can save. ill be looking out for some of your part outs
CobaltPerformanceParts 09-16-2007, 08:48 PM We sell this kit what kind of questions do you have on it?

I PMed you
anyone else?
Novajoe 09-16-2007, 09:48 PM It's a well-made kit. The only thing I don't like about it is it only comes with a flash tune for the initial setup. If you want to change anything on it then you have to spend more money on a piggyback.
However the kit's decently cheap so I can't bitch too much for how good it works.
As far as "no name" parts... just because something doesn't have a name brand on it doesn't always mean it sucks. The fact is the whole kit has a name on it. A very good one.

What would i need to change? im not looking to make this thing any faster then 200whp and only plan on full exhaust with this kit.

then don't worry about it. you can put an exhaust on it without extra tuning. Hell it's reccommended. I was talking about adding boost and such.
mkulrey13 09-16-2007, 10:04 PM nahh i prob would turn boost down to 5psi anyways for DD. dont need 8psi to get to work. wanna keep this car awhile so dont wanna stress everything all the time.

you wouldn't be able to turn the boost down without a boost controller and a way to change the tuning...
That said the kit is made to work completely reliably on a completely stock car for a long period of time. Several companies have spent alot of time+money for this.
Sw4y1313 09-16-2007, 10:35 PM You cant turn down boost with a controller you can only increase. well for the most part. You would need to replace the wastegate actuator spring from a 8lb spring to 5lb, then turn the boost "up" to run 8. but it would be stupid.. trust me you dont need to do that. 8psi on the street is VERY fun, and easy to drive.
mkulrey13 09-16-2007, 10:44 PM yea i guess your right, and who knows after driving it at 8 i wouldnt want to change it :)

my bad. didn't really think about it. Don't have alot of experience with turning DOWN the boost:lol:
tonio5555 09-17-2007, 12:12 AM Garrett is very very reputable, I'm sure its all quality. That being said 200hp should be no problem. You're manual right? I don't think the kit supports the auto.
Smitty1017 09-17-2007, 05:48 AM The kit supports the auto, but the auto doesn't support the kit. see what im saying?
Also, the man doesn't support the auto, therefore the auto doesn't support the man, therefore the auto doesn't give the man any money to support it, and the man suspects that the autos have no money anyways, so he ignores it. Therefore, the man is keeping us down.
celicacobalt 09-17-2007, 09:14 AM I have had this kit on for a good 6 months now and Im loving it. very high quality kit.

didnt you have tunning problems? im assuming since your a 2.4 you went with HP tuners and not the reflash thats included
