Exclamation If you have a STOCK cobalt, please answer this question

First, I would like state that I have only been driving a manual for a little over a month and to apologize for asking such a "stupid" question.

However, I have been driving my car the same since I got it and the gas mileage was constant, but within the last week it has been going down.

My only question is: What RPMs are people shifting at when driving calmly? and What RPMs are people shifting at when driving more aggressively (NOT TRACK RACING!)

I apologize again for a lame question, but I want to try different things.

Thank you for your patience,
Nick

I have had a stick my whole life and I have decided that this car is impossible to drive. You cant shift it below 3k without absolutely DRAGGING your foot through the friction zone. It is meant to be RIPPED at all times....

gas mileage will increase as the motor breaks in a little more...

also gas will depend on how heavy your foot is.....

daily driving... normally 2.6-2.8k shift points
racing.. 6.8-6.9k

i never shift below 2.8 k. shifting below that point can glaze the fly wheel, and make the clutch slip.

Agreed, I shift at 2500-2700 for daily driving and I'm sitting at 47k on a stock clutch with no issues what so ever.

If you're still not sure you're comfortable with driving a stick and shifting at just the right point, 3k is a good "benchmark" to shift at. As you get more comfortable/confident, play with it a little and see what feels best to you.

You can keep laughing but it is true. Unfortunately, it is related to the way our clutch/transmission is built. Ask around a little.

thats funny because i had problems untill i started shifting higher.. and i've seen plenty of fly wheels glazed over from people shifting at some pretty stupid shift points

like i said.. more practice... i know exactly what you refer to with under the 3k shift, it took me about a week after owning the car to get around that annoyance...but to each his own.. so ditto...
i mean.. im not gonna debate this.. but what causes glaze... not your shift points...

GM just pieced this car together and didn't even care. That's why the gears are too short. I shift around 3000rpm in 1st and 2nd and go straight to 5th gear afterwards.

For a car that has been pieced together, mine sure holds up well. 26K on her with stock axles, stock clutch, and she has had Stg2 from inception and I have modded her since and continue to do so.

Pieced from other cars. Our tranny is from a Saab. 1st gear is designed for towing. Ever wondered why it was so short?

I didn't have any problems with my stock clutch, and I keep it under 2500 almost all the time. I still have my stock axles in one piece, even if they are in a box in my garage. I changed the axles so I wouldn't have to be towed home worst case scenario. My Clutch still looked good when I took it out. Only problem I was having was it was slipping when I went to the track, and only when I went to the track.

The best for me is first gear 3k rpm 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear 2500 rpm and 5th 2300rpm, note this is only when i'm on the street not the highway which i will need to accelerate faster. Remember even though the car is stock every car is different and so is the driver. IMO the best thing you can do is not set yourself on a certain rpm just shift as according to when you feel the car ask you for the next gear.

you should be at at least 25-30 mph before going into third. 2nd is preeeettty much a 1/1 ratio so thats 2500-3000 rpms. 1st gear i always shift around 3500 rpms, or like...16 mph. the other shifts are just BS shifts.

2nd is definitely not a 1:1 ratio. 4th is the closest.

yea, third is something like 1.9:1, so maybe 1.19:1, and 4th is the closest, not sure on exact number. No way second is close to 1:1

My opinion shift above 3000 to help keep clutch slippage down

Fourth Gear will always be like 1:1, fifth would be about .75:1 or around there.

I shift at around 3K to keep the clutch from glazing over. If I dont give it enough gas sometimes I can feel the car wanting a gear change but thats rare. 3 grand always at like quarter throttle to half throttle. Random WOT and rarely do I do that. 22mpg

last time i checked i think it said 4th gear was like .98:1 and 5th was like .84:1 or something like that..i usually shift at 3k rpm now and then put it in th gear any thing over 70km/h any thing below that then i put it in 4th

*edit* and my mileage just started going up which im happy about after i did the air-box mod ..although could just be the car is finally really super broken in now haha

around 3000 normal driving.

its perfectly fine to shift lower; that is of course, if you can control your left foot.

Yeah, if you come from driving a 93 yota pickup to the cobalts, you gotta re-adjust your lefty just a tad
