View Full Version : I have 2.4l auto i want a supercharger or a turbo... what to go with?
SC cobaltss15 09-24-2007, 06:53 PM Hey guys i have a 2.4l automatic cobalt. I have been told that u dont turbo an auto u always supercharge. But here i have seen some that are turboed too. I am looking for a decent gain in horsepower. Also with this added what would i be running against. or like similar too?
thanks a lot sam
help i need suggestions
It doesn't matter what type of transmission you have, as long as it can take the tq you throw at it.
SC cobaltss15 09-24-2007, 06:56 PM I have the 2.4l automatic.. I am llookin to buy a supercharger or a turbocharger..I have been told go supercharger because autmatic but i have seen some autos turboed...so what do u guys all think
Halfcent 09-24-2007, 07:27 PM Merged, just one thread please.
SC cobaltss15 09-24-2007, 07:43 PM okay...welll then if i went with a turbo...would the automatic transmission be able to shit right and stuff?
Projekt 09-24-2007, 07:44 PM okay...welll then if i went with a turbo...would the automatic transmission be able to shit right and stuff?
ill take it u ment shift, yes the automatic tranny holds up with forced induction alot better then the 5spd one, members have done it and it works..your cooking with gas
SC cobaltss15 09-24-2007, 07:48 PM what would it affect...would the gas milage change
Schultzay 09-24-2007, 08:41 PM i've asked celica cobalt about this (2.4 turbo by hahn) and he hasn't seen much of a change at all in his gas mileage.
DrPuttsSS/SC 09-24-2007, 08:49 PM You are going to have to learn a lot to do this right, no matter which way you go. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3iBKwcQ3Yc I got that from the Gale Banks website and it explains about turbo/superchargers, how they work and the differences between them. Once you watch part one (the link), click on part two to watch it also.
You'll be an expert just from those two videos!!
I'd go turbo because it may be cheaper and you won't lose 20 or so HP just spinning the blower, but many things will affect your final decision. By far the easiest way is to buy a good kit, from a reputable company that has everything single part worked out for you.
Search the forums, there are tons of threads about this!
Good Luck!
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-24-2007, 08:51 PM im superchargin my 2.4 ss....b/c....i love the whiinnne!!!!! and its cheaper...and thats basically it
SC cobaltss15 09-24-2007, 08:56 PM thank you that helped a lot!!!

If you are going to turbo or S/C a 2.4L with Variable Valve Timing, you should also replace the LE5 intake and exhaust cams with those from a LNF engine to gain the best performance and to avoid "overlap condensation"!
SC cobaltss15 09-25-2007, 09:18 AM well i have a k&n intake right now
yoppzilla 09-25-2007, 09:57 AM keep researching man/ theirs all kinds of threads on forced induction
celicacobalt 09-25-2007, 10:07 AM i have very close to stock drivability and MPG. Power is great automatic handles the power like a champ though i have added a tranny cooler.
SC cobaltss15 09-25-2007, 05:19 PM yea... well if i went with the hahn how mch do u think my car will be pushing?...celicacobalt what kind of cars can u run against!!
J3sSS 09-25-2007, 06:14 PM go hahn turbo kit dyno specs say 290hp with turbo kit at stock healthy 8psi that is 120hp gain safely cant beat that im goin 2.4 eco in my 01 cavy im goin hahn kit u cant beat it for $3400 stage 2 u will smoke the ss supercharged
celicacobalt 09-25-2007, 09:20 PM yea... well if i went with the hahn how mch do u think my car will be pushing?...celicacobalt what kind of cars can u run against!!
well, 2007 mustang GT's are no problem if that means anything, at least when i was at the track they were getting slower times than me.
SC cobaltss15 09-25-2007, 09:59 PM yea okay..would i be able to run a cobalt s/c? cause i have driven one of those soo i kinda know how quick it is
bigrroberto 09-25-2007, 10:04 PM ^^^ a stock one, sure, no problem
SC cobaltss15 09-25-2007, 10:09 PM dAMN I AM LIKING HOW THIS SOUNDS cause those are quick.. what about a subaru sti?
Schultzay 09-26-2007, 02:17 AM lol that was quite the jump. from a stock SS/SC to an STI lol
it really depends on how much HP you're making and how much of that power is actually making it to the wheels. traction is also an issue. So it could be different for each and every set up but if you're making 290 whp lol then yea you could run with the big boys
SC cobaltss15 09-26-2007, 09:11 AM lol okay man.. thanks.. i needto run with the big boys considering i roll around with a sti. srt-4 and evo mr... lol so yea
how much do u think it will cost for installation and a nice tune. also need to add in a guage cluster pillar and the guages for everything and not just that but also i would be looking to invest in a boost control.. Considering i will be turboing a automatic will you even her the turbo... like would it be worth buying a bllow off valve or nah. Thanks
SC

trust me, you WILL hear the turbo in the automatic!
SC cobaltss15 09-26-2007, 07:14 PM like thats not what i mean by hear the turbo.. i mean like with a manuel when u shift.. u hear the noise from the blow off valve... would u hear that with an automatic too?
Soo what exactly are he steps to turboing the 2.4l. like what do i need to do
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-26-2007, 07:15 PM lol..u get killed by an sti
Mimmsey 09-26-2007, 07:21 PM here is what you need to know about forced induction in an automatic. It is better to go forced induction on an auto because you wont lose boost between shifts. However with the good come the bad. While the transmission may hold the power, the clutches in the automatic trans may not so make sure to have a little nest egg in case you need to rebuild. The way you can protect your automatic is get some trans cool an perhaps an external transmission cooler. A shift kit will also aid in cooling but may damage other parts of the transmission. I would recommend the supercharger in your application, mainly because it would be really easy to install on a 2.4, if memory serves me correctly i believe gm offers one for the 2.4.
SC cobaltss15 09-26-2007, 07:36 PM okay well where would i go about finding that?
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-26-2007, 07:40 PM im supercharging mine...im falling in love with the whine!..da whine is jsut as loud as a turbo too
SC cobaltss15 09-26-2007, 07:50 PM yea but which one gives off more horsepower.. and not only that.. but what do i need to do to get a supercharger... what are the steps and what will i need??? and also a price range
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-26-2007, 07:59 PM well once pjk91 finishes hes giving a complete list on the 2.4 ss/sc...which is basically parts of 2.0 lsj ss/sc
SC cobaltss15 09-26-2007, 08:06 PM okay true.thats sounds good.. how much horsepower do u think it will add?
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-26-2007, 08:08 PM senior brown put down 230whp and 205tq...w/o any other mods besides i think he gots an exhaust too...so nice numbers!....as fast as a stock srt-4
firebalt 09-27-2007, 01:09 AM yea but which one gives off more horsepower...
turbo's have the higher potential to get more horsepower
but the supercharger would be easier
watched some brick guy's video on youtube, hes an expert on boosting and getting air into the engine, cold air at that), he explains that for every psi of boost you get about a 7% increase in horsepower
pretty sure, theres a vendor in the vendors section of this forum that has a supercharger kit available

buick gnx 1500 hp...auto.... tell that to my buddy who owns that car... its turbo'd
celicacobalt 09-27-2007, 08:05 AM like thats not what i mean by hear the turbo.. i mean like with a manuel when u shift.. u hear the noise from the blow off valve... would u hear that with an automatic too?

yes, you will hear the BOV when you let off the gas after being in boost
Sw4y1313 09-27-2007, 09:30 AM The M62 on the LE5 engine i believe has a lot more potential then it ever had on the LSJ. The larger displacement alone and VVT makes the LE5 M62 combo very powerful. I cant wait to see the numbers a 2.7 or 2.8 pulley put to the wheels on one of those. Im guessing easily 280-290whp on a dynojet. I also wanna see the 2.5 pulley put down like 310+whp on it. I know its possible and the LE5 can take it!

LNF cams swapped into the LE5 will maximize the M62 potential HP improvements.

has the cam swap ever been done to say that its even doable?
Sw4y1313 09-27-2007, 04:20 PM has the cam swap ever been done to say that its even doable?
I was going to say that too. I dont see how it wouldnt be since i think they are almost identical heads right? Just havent seen anyone do the swap yet. That or you could get some aftermarket cams.
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-27-2007, 04:31 PM 250 whp ..id be extremely happy with that....the 2.0 s/ swap will be my last major thing i do to my ss/na
SC cobaltss15 09-27-2007, 05:24 PM what why would u buy the 2.4l then if u are going to do the swap to a 2.0l s/c??

LNF and LE5 cams are physically interchangeable ..... if you check the lift and durations of the intake and exhaust cams, you should recognize one pair is for forced induction and the other is for natural aspiration applications.

headers...d/p//...tranny mounts&engine mounts...strut bar...smaller pulley and bigger injectors <---once proven its safe for the 2.4...like other people said since where the 2.4 motor it can get up around 300whp

i know it matches up on paper but i wanna see it physically done before i try it.

I wasnt doubting you dude, just sayin i havent seen it done yet. I agree with celica i would wait it. Tho doing a cam swap isnt that hard. I would just get the current cam regrinded for $250 then buy whole new cams.
wordsthatiwrote 09-27-2007, 10:58 PM what why would u buy the 2.4l then if u are going to do the swap to a 2.0l s/c??
I dont believe they are swapping motors. Just adding the s/c from the 2.0 to the 2.4 So in the end we would have a 2.4 s/c vehicle.
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 04:12 PM ^^^thank you...everyone always get confused when i say"swap"...i never mention any motor swap...s/c swap/...i believe i always have that part in there when i say it too
Jackalope 09-28-2007, 04:15 PM The blower from a is an AWESOME set-up for our's and makes more hp and waaaay more tq then a running the same stuff will. You know displacement and all. :D
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 04:18 PM yo jack!...u doing the s/c swap on ur 2.4??

As soon as I find a wrecked ss/sc localy I can rape for parts YES! I've already talked to the shop who tried to tune my car before and he said he wants to try it again cause I sent him about 8 or 9 customers and that he'll spend all day if he has to getting it right! I mentioned the blower in the near futur and he said it'll be easy to tune for! And he has a dyno right at his shop so I can get base line numbers before and after the install! The cars paid off, I have no more bills other then mortgage so the next few months should be fun! :D
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 04:37 PM I need a tune !!! no one in my area:thumbsdow
Jackalope 09-28-2007, 04:44 PM I need a tune !!! no one in my area:thumbsdow
Let him get mine right and I'll set you up for one. It may be a little drive but it's well worth it. He's about an hour and half south of harrisburg down 83 and thru Baltimore city.
I can meet you and you could follow me (or try and keep up :D) to his shop.
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 04:46 PM lol^^^^...which one is faster haha...i try not to speed dat much io do like 80-90 mph at da most lol...yea...it seems like im gonna have to make a long drive cause no one has hp tuners in bucks county/philly area
Jackalope 09-28-2007, 04:52 PM Where are you in PA? I don't know where bucks county is.
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 04:53 PM im in levittown..its like 15 mins from ne philly.....30-40 mins from the sports complex in south philly...for me to bmore...most likely 2hr drive
Jackalope 09-28-2007, 04:55 PM Down 95?
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 04:56 PM yea...dont u take i95 stright done to bmore...pass chester...deleware and some other cities lol...im a philly boy...i live in philly for 11 years
Jackalope 09-28-2007, 05:00 PM Yeah if your near 95 thats your best bet. Sorry I had a brain fart, I thought you had a 2.4 don't ask me why. Anyway he already does tunes for the 2.0 and he gets more hp out of them then anyone else I've seen so far! He has a dyno so you can proove to the haters what your puttin down when hes done.
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 09-28-2007, 05:05 PM kool...! i do have the 2.4 lol....yea..let me know when u want to do this ..i def want to my engine light been on for like 2-3 weeks...!
