View Full Version : Retro Fit Update: HIDS
Switt23 09-24-2007, 06:32 PM This is my update, waiting on Biske to help me out with a template for the bezel to cover the back. I already have the aluminum for that, just waiting the template.
I am getting the Shrouds re-chromed due to my lovely mail man. They look good in pics, but in reallife you can see the imperfections. Chips in the chrome. Anyways, here it go..
C&C Encouraged!!!!

Sorry if pics seem huge or blurry, from my camera phone... 1.3 Mega Pixels.
IonNinja 09-24-2007, 06:37 PM are you doing your own retrofit?
JRelly 09-24-2007, 06:38 PM what car did you get the projectors from?
Herndon_High_SS 09-24-2007, 06:42 PM Damn those are some big projectors. Makes me want to go back to the idea of projector retrofit.
Grimlakin 09-24-2007, 06:44 PM Damn I wish someone would do a high quality projector kit for the Cobalt SS/SC. I espcially wish GM would. But since they can't even keep manufacturing up... who knows.
th0ughtless 09-24-2007, 07:37 PM Those look sick. I want to make some for my car when I get the extra cash. What all did you buy and for what price?
R&C_rallySS 09-24-2007, 07:47 PM Those look great. I like the look to them, be keeping an eye on these and using all my +rep on you!
Switt23 09-24-2007, 10:05 PM Those are E55 Bi-xenon Projectors from a BMW 7 series. They are a 3" Projector, not known for it's GREAT output, not saying it's bad at all, but they aren't top of the line. They are however said to be one of the best High Beam projectors, which i like.
The chrome Shrouds are E55 shrouds again from the BMW 7 series, using a D2S Bulb and Ballast.
Yes I am doing my own retrofit. What you see now is roughly 25-27 hours worth of labor, and I am not even done. I still have to cut the aluminum backing and cover the back part of the projector, sand and polish the lenses (of the headlight, not the projector :))until they are as clear as I can get them. Reseal everything, finish my harness and then I will be done.
Judging from the picture too, I am not at home to look at them, but it appears that the headlight on the right needs it's projector adjusted. It looks like it's pointing too far towards the passagner side. As soon as I finish my harness, I will know better.
For those that know, these ARE the same projectors (at least model, not exact ones) that Mercury used. The only difference is that I actually got the chrome shroud to go with them.
Honestly, these headlights are not that hard to make. HOWEVER, with that being said. If you are a person that can not SLOW things down and make them perfect, I wouldn't advice this project. What I mean by that is that if you are the type of person that can't wait long enough for the paint to try completely, or you want it done within a day.... move on, or contact a retrofitter.
So what's your guys' overall opinion.... good, bad, get rid of them?
Red06LS 09-24-2007, 10:09 PM I dont have the paticence but sick!!!
xspyder85x 09-24-2007, 10:14 PM looks good so far, keep it up
hatrickstu 09-24-2007, 10:15 PM i like those so far. probably alot like the supra projectors ill try to be workig with ;)
Switt23 09-24-2007, 10:19 PM xspyder, just to let you know... i think I am going with your style eyelid on the lense. Not sure yet, but definately leaning towards it.
Switt23 09-25-2007, 05:59 PM I NEED HELP... I have tried like 5 times now to cut out a decent cover to hide the back part of the bezel, but i can't get it to look alright.
CAN ANYBODY HELP? Anybody have any ideas what to do, I am cutting with aluminum and a dremel/tin snipes.
Cobalt_SSTuner 09-25-2007, 06:02 PM damn, looks badass!
07cobaltguy 09-25-2007, 06:03 PM i would CNC that, if i got the all (i mean all) the dimentions i could program it for you if you have some one to machine it.
Switt23 09-25-2007, 06:08 PM Do you think fiberglass would look best??
rallyracer 09-25-2007, 06:18 PM Do a how too for this please
Switt23 09-25-2007, 06:20 PM Mercury already made one. Or do you mean for the Fiberglass Shroud cover?
infernica 09-26-2007, 12:17 AM very nice bro, keep us all updated!!!
Switt23 09-26-2007, 06:44 PM lol, back from the doctor getting stitches. Ladies and Gentleman, when cutting sheet metal, make sure to wear heavy duty gloves as they can easily slice all the way through your hand. 3 stitches, no biggy.
Have pics up later of the template for the cover.
Okay cover was painted and put on. my phone is eing ghetto and wont send the pics?
Updated Pics of the bezel cover. Almost done.

Now that I know that everythings fits and is aimed as close as I can get it. I am gunna take them back apart and throw the headlights away. :) Just Kidding! I'm gunna perfect everything as best I can. I want paint to be perfect. The chrome shrouds are getting re-chromed. The Lenses are getting buffed as clear as I can get'em. More work, but I want them PERFECT!
...bump

Switt23 09-26-2007, 08:29 PM I will post that up tomorrow. My camera doesn't take night shots worth a crap.
xspyder85x 09-27-2007, 06:09 AM keep it up!
Switt23 09-27-2007, 04:46 PM Thanks for all the support guys. This is actually my first mod to the cobalt besides painting the bowties and debaging.
Grimlakin 09-27-2007, 07:52 PM Awsome mod though. May the future of fog be evaded without your clean kit!
Herndon_High_SS 09-27-2007, 09:15 PM So the e55 arnt that good of projectors? What would be a good set that's not a rediculous price out there? I really want to take up this project.
Switt23 09-27-2007, 10:31 PM I never said that they're not good projectors, they IMO just aren't the BEST. They do however have some of the best HIGH Beam action out of any projector.
IMO the best would be a set of TLs with a Crystal Clear Lense, but they set you back like $220.
