View Full Version : 2.4 SS Mileage
teluan 11-08-2005, 11:22 PM What's your computer display mileage reading?
Mine milage in a 2006 SS Sedan with 200 miles on it has been getting between 12.9 and 13.1L/100km (21.6 to 21.8MPG). I have not been driving it that hard at all?
averagewhiteboy 11-08-2005, 11:33 PM I get around 23 or so. I only drive on the highway when I'm driving to and from work. That's like 3 days a week...for a total of about 15 minutes. Otherwise, it's all around town, to school and the like. I haven't really driven it super hard yet. But using the 91+ (I use 93) I'm sure would give you the best results. I'll get the actual number for you tomorrow. However, I am auto btw. So it tries to kick down more than I would with a stick. When I had my Accord, I'd always let it rev drop.
I average around 11.9 L/ 100 kms in mine only get about 420 kms to a tank of 91 octane that is mostly around town, mileage is not as good as i expected, but the car has a fairly small gas tank compared to my old cavalier
GeoChevyCobalt 11-09-2005, 12:31 AM I can get around 30 to 37 MPG for the Colbatl SS/SC. I think you guys can do better. This is all freeway driving thought. Right know I got 350 miles out of one tank and have gotten 392 miles at one time. It is all about how you drive the car and differenct between city and hyway.
RaineMan 11-09-2005, 12:42 AM My daily drive is about 15 miles stop-and-go in traffic, never above 55mph. I'm getting between 22 & 23MPG with my intake installed.
Before I put it on I was getting 24 - 25. *shrugs*
MikeSS 11-09-2005, 12:43 AM I run around 26-30 MPG and most of that is hard driving. it has dropped since I got my intake put in, but that is due to my driving.
averagewhiteboy 11-09-2005, 07:54 AM Mine's still under 1000 miles...so it's probably still sorta breaking in...
avro206 11-09-2005, 08:15 AM from day one have gotten 9.5L per 100kms as an average on each tank. Have gotten down to 7.7L but thats on some serious ling distance highway driving. As soon as I hit city traffic--up she went.
Thats 29 US mpg (33 CDN) 5400kms on it. Maybe another 5,000 to get fully broken in?
derek0609 11-09-2005, 08:47 AM 1300 Miles
26.4 MPG
avro206 11-09-2005, 09:49 PM reset the fuel mileage today on the way to work on the Deerfoot. Got her down to 7.0L per 100km
DETROITGT 11-10-2005, 11:23 AM 800 Miles 28.6MPG and climbing w/ cheapest 87 octane available. (5-speed)
c7015 11-10-2005, 12:13 PM no to clutter the SS/NA milage but for referecne ...I am at 9.1L/100km in the City and 8.4L/100km highway .. a friend of mine has a 2.2L Coupe and I get better milage than her (hers is auto 11.3L/100km city)
for compairing milage it should be noted if it is Auto and if it is Sedan or coupe (if not in sig)
brentil 11-10-2005, 03:40 PM Wish I had the aerodynamic benefit of your Cobalt's with my 2.4L VVT ECOTEC. I average 21mpg city and 27mpg highway and that's when I drive like a grandma. Only 1500 miles so far though so there's still more room for the engine to get better over time.
MajesticOne 11-16-2005, 07:03 AM I just broke 1000 miles and it reads 23.6. I drive kinda hard, but not that hard. It better start going up, there is no way the SC should be getting better mpg then us. According to the paper in the window when I bought it should be between 26-34 and I havn't seen anything next to that yet. And yes I know it is still breaking in. I just want it now, now, NOW!!! :)
swatthefly 11-16-2005, 02:19 PM i have a manual, and i know that if im having a crappy day of shifting, my milage is a whole lot lower
BlwnGP 11-19-2005, 12:02 AM I have about 500 miles and have been seeing 26.5mpg consistently in mixed driving (mostly highway). Will it go up once the car is broken in? If so, how many miles, typically before it is broken in (3000 miles?)
Fuel economy will increase once the motor is broke in, but it's a very insignificant number you wouldn't even notice.
Deaf_Dog 11-19-2005, 04:06 AM 3400 miles. Average about 35mpg i believe. I always get a little over 300 miles per tank before I have to fill up again
ThEChEat 11-19-2005, 12:25 PM Hrm, mine has 284 miles and I get roughly 26 mpg to 29.6 mpg. I was getting close to 34 the day I got it, but since then I haven't. I haven't really pushed it hard though, I think my top speed on it has been maybe 54?
demonspeed 11-19-2005, 11:21 PM Sorry to hijack, but do you need to run 91+ in the 2.4, or can you run 87 or 89? What is the window sticker mileage for the 2.4?
avro206 11-19-2005, 11:46 PM Sorry to hijack, but do you need to run 91+ in the 2.4, or can you run 87 or 89? What is the window sticker mileage for the 2.4?
sure you can put 87 or 89. The computer will dial back the timing and you will lose a few hp.
RaineMan 11-19-2005, 11:51 PM Window sticker mileage is always a lie.... the testing method that is used to determine mileage gives results that are off by 10% at the barest minimum.
And some FYI for Deaf Dog.... 35 MPG would net you 455 miles to a tank in our cars (13 gallon tank) Not to call you a liar.... but I don't see that happening. I can get around 270-300 miles to a tank, depending on how hard I push her. So roughly 21-23 MPG.
demonspeed 11-20-2005, 01:23 AM sure you can put 87 or 89. The computer will dial back the timing and you will lose a few hp.
I guess what I'm asking is does the owners manual recomend 91 but says it's ok to run 87 if you want a lack in performance?

exactly. To quote GM......"91 Octane is recommended but not required"
demonspeed 11-20-2005, 01:16 PM exactly. To quote GM......"91 Octane is recommended but not required"
Thank you.
RaineMan 11-20-2005, 01:42 PM Yeah, she'll run fine on 87 or 89.... but you'll lose some HP.... and therefore you should get worse mileage. If an extra 10¢-20¢ a gallon makes that much of a different to your wallet then please fill up with regular. If you do... do us a favor and let us know the mileage you're getting off of a tank of regular too.
Deaf_Dog 11-20-2005, 02:15 PM No offense taken SilverStreak. I actually doubled checked right now and it read 28.8.
About a month and a half ago I drove to New York and right before I left I reset everything. I was got over 30mpg on that trip. Tank and a half to get there and a tank and a half back home.
I reset my trip everytime i feel up and it's always between 290-305 miles. I drive 30 miles round trip to work. 3 lights on my way there but i rarely hit them when they are red.
RaineMan 11-20-2005, 02:27 PM Yeah, I'd totally believe 30MPG on the highway, certainly.
derek0609 11-21-2005, 08:11 AM Yeah, she'll run fine on 87 or 89.... fill up with regular. If you do... do us a favor and let us know the mileage you're getting off of a tank of regular too.
1300 Miles
26.4 MPG
This is my wife's car. It's now at 1900 miles and she is still getting 26.4MPG on 87 octane.
olddude 11-21-2005, 08:25 AM Yeah, she'll run fine on 87 or 89.... but you'll lose some HP.... and therefore you should get worse mileage.
Actually, the additives that increase octane do absolutely nothing for the energy content of the gasoline. All they do is make it more resistant to pre-ignition. When you are cruising along at less than WOT, the timing is no where near fully advanced and there should be no measurable difference in fuel economy.

21-23? You sure? I run 87, the cheapest gas I can find and I got 330 miles out of the tank before last fill up and I still could have gone another 40 miles before I needed to fill up.. I just had things I needed to do :P. I haven't ran my SS on 89 or 91+, but if it's better than 87, you should be getting around 30 MPG. I get 27 mpg off of 87.
biggsSS 12-04-2005, 08:07 AM Sorry to hijack, but do you need to run 91+ in the 2.4, or can you run 87 or 89? What is the window sticker mileage for the 2.4?
As long as you can get a consistent grade of gasoline, 87 is fine. I run 87 here in Vancouver and I always get my gas from Chevron (I know some of the states have Chevron gas stations.. but not all). For all you guys in the US.. try Texaco 87 octane. Haven't had any problems with my mileage.
I've had bad experiences with Esso/Exxon gas before.
RaineMan 12-04-2005, 02:05 PM I always use 93 octane.... I don't want to have the horsepower potential of this engine go to waste. I also drive in horrible city stop-and-go traffic.... so yeah, 23 is the best I'm seeing.
wills87 12-05-2005, 01:32 AM I have 4500 miles on my car and i only get around 20-21 mpg, never had any higher
PremioJoe 12-05-2005, 01:36 AM Even though I dont have the 2.4, it took my 2.2 a good 10000 to really break in. I have 20000 on my Cobalt now, and im getting around 32mpg overall. Just give the engine sometime to break in and you will see your gas mileage improve.

YEah, exactly. I am well over 13000KM now and my mileage has improved a lot.
brentil 12-05-2005, 11:43 AM I have 4500 miles on my car and i only get around 20-21 mpg, never had any higher
You must have a pretty heavy foot then. :D
Shifting at 2k-3k RPM and keeping it under that range for the most part, along with avoiding jack-rabbit starts, blipping on down shifts, high RPM downshifts, etc are the only way to get the rated fuel economy.
biggsSS 12-15-2005, 12:20 PM I'm getting 8.7L/100km with 30 min hwy/25 min city driving per day on 87 octane. I punch the throttle when i'm pissed off with traffic and I have to take a side street shortcut or passing some idiot doing 30 in a 60. I just hit the 4000 km mark too
celicacobalt 12-15-2005, 12:32 PM im only getting like 17mpg in mine with 700 miles on it
Today I got the best gas mileage out of my SS....when I got home after filling up the tank I checked the little computer thingy and it was saying 8.6l /100km!!!! WOW!

Damn son pull your foot off the gas.
But i get about 23-24mpg with 1400. But thats with driving it semi hard as two jobs during the holidays is hectick and it seems like everyone no matter what speed drives in the left lane :cussing: . Also thats mixed highway/city but i do about 80 on the highway so that hurts it a bit.
brentil 12-23-2005, 10:18 AM My fuel economy has actually gotten worse over time with the 2.4L VVT. However that's easily explainable. Around 2500-3000 miles the engine finally became really broken in. It revs far more quickly and smoothly then it ever did. It's been very hard to not want to make this engine go balls to the walls all the time. :D
Also up until last week the weather has been perfect so I've had the top down all the time, and that really kills my fuel economy by like 3 mpg instantly.
KillerNutz 12-23-2005, 10:48 AM I drive an 06 SS/SC 140 miles roundtrip to work every day. I average on the week between 28-32mpg. I dont drive like a grandma, but I also dont get on it at every stop light.
NMK95 12-23-2005, 11:03 AM I was getting 28 while it was warm out. Now I'm getting 25.5 since the temp dropped below freezing.
