This was reported in the Youngstown Vindicator dated 6/5/07:
Yougstown - Chevrolet is dropping the Cobalt SS Supercharged with the 2008 model year.
The engine in this version of the Cobalt won't meet new federal emissions standards that take effect next year, said Nancy Libby, a Chevrolet spokeswoman.
Officials are dropping the model rather than change the engine because the engine is used only for that model, she said. Adding a supercharger to an engine boosts horsepower and torque.
The supercharged Ecotec engine produces 205 horsepower in teh top-of-the-line Cobalt.
The Cobalt has three trim levels with its regular, 2-liter Ecotec engine, which produces 148 horsepower. Another version, the Cobalt SS, has a 2.4-liter, non supercharged engine that produces 173 horsepower.
Chevrolet is replacing the ss nonsupercharged model with a new version called the Sport model. (RedSS note - reduce use of the SS label - finally)
Libby said the company doesn't release sales figures for the individual versions of the Cobalt.
Also for 2008, these features will be standard on the Cobalt: head-curtain, side-impact air bags; tire pressure monitoring system; and XM Radio.
Looks like SS/SC owners will one day have a collectible car on their hands!
