Body Shop People

My last thread got me no where so maybe this one might help. I just bought a SS sedan rear bumper. Its in decent shape, minor scratchs if any. The color is red and i will need it repainted black. Does anyone know a EST. price this will cost me? I will probably get this done at the dealer for a perfect match and known good work that do. Thanks.

I would guess around 2-2.5 hours labor at whatever the labor rate is in your area ($45.00 dollars per hour where I work) and probably around $100 materials.

well, call around to local shops and see how much it costs to paint a bumper. then double it, there's your dealer price. probably not exagerating.

but make sure you let them know up front that you will be just bringing the bumper, they will paint it, and YOU will install it. when i had a bumper quoted they tried telling me 400. (not dealer. if it's not warranty work it will NEVER see the dealer) after i told them i would install it dropped to 200

If you do the installation and all yourself the price will drop considerably.

Also, I know body work is very specialized, but you might want to give it a shot at doing it yourself. My friend and his dad recently painted his whole car. OK it isnt 110$ perfect, but it looks damn good and they saved a lot lot of money. Worst case scenario you do a shitty job and it just goes to the shop to be striped and painted anyway.

accually that would be a bad thing to do /\

cause it wont look nice (im sorry but if you dont have some experence, it wont) then the shop will have to fix his mess ups as well, which will cost him even more

the bumper should be around $200-$300 to have it painted

Paint labor hours on a bumper are usually in the 3.5 hr range, so if your local labor rate for paint labor is $45/hr, you would be looking at about $160 for the labor. Then add materials which is calculated by using the same hours for paint labor only at a lower rate around $25/hr, Which is about $90 for materials. When added together you get about $250 for labor and materials, which can vary depending on the labor rate at the shop you go to.

A little off the subject, but why do people think a dealer bodyshop would charge more money? I have worked in independent and dealer shops and both get their numbers from the same book. Pricing has to be competitive to stay in buisness.
You should also get the same quality of work (in general) from a dealer or independent shop, paint and materials all come from the same place. The guy doing the work is the only difference.
Thank you for your time,
Dennis

320 grit the bitch, scotchbrite where you cant get the sander in, and buy sealer and paint.
do it yourself, save about 200 bucks and buy an intake or somethin.
dont do the dealer thing, dealers will try to get xtra cash outta you somehow somewhere.

at my body shop down in canada, our paint labour is at 97.40 CAN.
but as the old saying goes, ur gonna get what you paid for and we've pushed out some sweet paint work.

take a look on the net, prepping and painting isnt that hard and learning it will save you big cash throughout your lifetime.

regardless, good luck...

I dont know why your so bent on getting it done at a dealership. This dealership your bringing it to,does it do it in house?Alot of dealers around me dont do them in house, they send them to a local body shop.Just get rid of the middle man and bring it to a body shop.Id bring it to a body shop if i were, you will get just as good a job if not better than a dealership.
