Well heres the deal,

Got stage 2 installed not even 200 miles ago. Left the dealership and ran it several times with John2k5 the next night and noticed my temp reaching 209F so I parked it and cooled it off noticing it only got hot when the ac was turned off.

4 days later the temp gets to around 55F coming back from the mall I notice my cel light comes on. The next morning it's still on as I drove to work. Temp was 37F that morning.
Later in the day temp is about 79F and the cel light goes off. Later in the evening temp gets about 62 coming home light comes on again.

I live in central Florida at an elevation of 150 feet.
Could it be because I ran John that night and got the car hot and it was still new with Stage 2 it made it learn the air / fuel maps wrong and expects hotter weather?
I had the code checked its the infamous p0171 code.
Could the temp be the issue as it goes away when it's warm?
I have a 2.9 coming from Nate and I'm worried if it's safe to put it on.

Please give feedback I'm concerned.

if your car is overheating I wouldn't throw on a smaller pulley. Are you sure you got reflashed? 7000RPM redline and such?

 

209 is not hot, and it gets cooler with the A/C on because the PCM turns the fans on when A/C is on.

I have had a lean code only 1 time with my car, Stage 1, 2.8, K&N. Was on a warm day, lasted for a day or so and went away. Don't worry about it.

 

Yeah 7k redline and such. It was funny after the 3rd run it started to get into the 200 degree temps but wouldn't go any higher and as soon as I turned ac on it dropped quickly back to 189 which is what it usually runs at.
It's Florida so it does run hot and I plan on getting a Cobra H/E when I find one cheap.
Could it be the fuel map was learned the wrong way?
If I disconnet the battery for 10 minutes those it reset the ecu and the map has to be relearned correct?
The codes been on for two days now and I'm concerned I am running lean so I wouldn't want to throw the 2.9 on then.
I've heard the codes is okay I've heard it's bad anyone know?

 

what was the outdoor air temp when you did the runs? 209 is pretty hot....
was that after the run while you were idling for a while? if so, thats expected.
if it was 209 during the run, or during regular cruising speed, thats a problem
sounds like you did multiple runs, if so, you need to try and avoid doing runs back to back like that if you can.
its just better all around for your engine to let it cool between hard driving.
it also gives you more HP to do this.


Your CEL sounds like its likely the lean condition cel common with cold air intakes, espeically ones with oiled filters.
do you have an intake?
if so, which one?

 

Just have the stock intake no mod.

 

my car has gotten to 223 before it started to cool down...mods are in my sig. I also drove the car for about a year with no intercooler...

 

as long as it dont get over 230 degrees i believe it is your fine for some reason the stage 2 tune allows it to get that hot why i dont know its stupid

 

isn't p0171 the lean code? Sounds like they forgot to flash your car if anything. Other than that it wouldn't have anything to do with the Stg 2

I have the 7,000rpm redline and 16lbs of boost.
I just find it strange it only happens when it gets cold.
Anyone know if this is due to the fuel map getting set wrong?
Will a battery disconnect make it relearn the map?

I mean, i guess you could try that. ****, it is a cobalt, you never ****** know what'll make these things happy.

 

Mine comes on when its really cold out and I am running at 80ish MPH. It is always the lean code and goes away a day or two later. I wouldnt worry about it.

 

Alright I've pulled the battery for 15 minutes.
Light is gone and drove it 16 miles home with no issue with the temp 69F outside.
I'm going to a friends house 5 miles later tonight and the tem pshould be in the 50's.
Let you know what happens.

 

Do u have an aftermarket cold air intake..?? If you do, that is what is causing the CEL code due to the lower temperatures. The computer thinks it is running lean because of the extra colder air. I live in Nebraska and when the temp starting dropping, I started getting that same code everyother day.

 

the maf calibration is what causes the 171/172 codes to be tripped.

209 is not hot for this car. if you saw the fan settings in hpt, you'd cry. thy did this to squeak the car by emissions testing.

 

As stated before I have a stock airbox and no modding done to it.

The fuel map in the ecu or the maf sensor?

you have two options. leave the code be, and it will cycle itself out. or keep clearing it and pull your hair out.

 

Does reseting the computer by disconnecting the battery count as clearing it out or cycling.

 

Alright sorry to bring back an old thread but wanted to give you all an update so if anyone searches with the same issues they'll see it.

I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and reconnected it. Cel was gone and I let the car idle for a 2 minutes before driving it. It's been 2 days and no cel. Drove it multiple times in cool 50F weather with no cel. So (knock on wood) it looks like its gone.

cool. i might have to do this again with my car. i have the air box mod...no stage kit yet, and in the winter time, the lean CEL gets thrown every other day. I just learned to pay no attention to it, because i know it's no big deal. i'll probably end up cycling my battery again to try to clear it out, because i dont want to become immune to my CEL and miss something major.

 

Mine use to do the same thing, btw, where do you live in FL?

 

Just as an FYI; this is something I came across while talking to a tech at the stealership lately. Sometimes you can get the p0170 because of the air filter. If the filter gets dirty it can cause a whirlwind effect within the intake making the MAF read incorrectly. Simply turning the filter 180 degrees or replacing the filter can correct the issue. This is only for stock intakes of course.

 

Your car is fine you live in florida , im outside of tampa and my car used to do this until i got someone with hptuners to turn my fans to come on sooner. your car should stay around 180-185 when crusin. when you come to a stop its gone go up. DO the air box mod your car probaly needs to breathe. I bet it will make a big differnece

 

use Royal Purple's 'Purple Ice' or use some 'water wetter' the Purple Ice reduced my temps from 205 to 185. Not bad for less than 10 bucks.
