K, since i wanna push my tune a little closer to the edge next year, i picked up an EGT gauge,
after looking around the net, i havent found any definitive information on what levels are acceptable with a blown 4 cylinder environment
so im looking for input.
what kinds of temperatures are normal, during cruise, during part throttle, during WOT
what levels are dangerous to the point where you should change something

this varies greatly on the tune.
between 45-65 mph i sit at 1200 degree's. 70-75 it sits at 1275. 80-90 about 1325-1375. 95 it sits at 1400.
wide open will greatly vary on you. from a 60-140 punch mine hits about 1425. from a 0-110 it hits 1350.
keep in mind, water injection lowers the egt temps on average about 200-250 degree's. it's not uncommon to see an egt peg 1600 in a car without wi. at least in the cars i have tinkered with. all of them are still running just fine to date.

now, just to make sure i'm following here... you guys are speaking of the exhaust fumes right? not the actual temp of the piping? (I realize they go hand in hand but I just wanna make sure)
this is cylinder temps basically you measure the temp right outside your hotest cylinder in our case 4 so you drill and tap the header near the head and mount the probe, yes this is the gases you are measuring

yeah its a probe almost like an 02 sensor that sits in the piping and tells you the temp of the gasses coming past it....if you wanted to you could run 3 probes pre cat, o2 WBo2, EGT

like for A/F its pretty much somewhere around 12.0-12.5, once you go past that its getting risky
is there a similar line in the sand for egts?

id say past 1500.. cause my bro's banks powerstroke while boosting 27psi towing a toy hauler got to 1400.. and that was dangerous for his car. i dont think the LSJ loves the heat like a diesel.
not for this engine. sadly enough. if it was a dsm, i could give you a set in stone answer, but the lsj runs a lot hotter.
it also depends if you are mounting the probe in the primary, or the downpipe. mine is in the number 4 primary about 2 inches away from the head itself. im runnin a consistant 12.3 afr, my numbers will be vastly different than yours due to my water injection cooling the charge. id aim for 1450-1500 on a 0-110 mph blast.
just fro reference on engine differences. the evo guys aim for 1700-1800 degree's. scary **** isn't it. this is the temperature of the combustion charge comming out of the head. not the temperature of the metal itself.
if you drop an ash from a cigarette onto your hand it's hot. yes. if you drop the whole cig on your hand it will burn a lot more then a single ember will. translate this into your engine. running 1300 cruizing around is the single ash. the whole cig is your chamber at wot.
diesels run a different type of fuel. this doesn't apply to us.

Is 1600* really scary... kinda as long as it doesn't STAY there! If you get a quicker reacting gauge (Like Area found out with his first EGT) It goes up and then back down rather quickly.
What you don't want is the temp to raise and not fall again just as quickly!

different engine make up. forms of induction, efficiency. if you wanted to peg the gauge, by all means go for it. there is a number of reasons why number explodes. when people say the melted a ring land, it's due to excessive heat.
oh no, i have no intentions of pushing it past a safe level, but im just trying to learn more about what makes an engine able to handle more etc.
