Says Vortec but looks like a regular 4cyl ecotec motor.

Vortec I believe has different head designs and are only found in trucks. Usually based off of another motor.

nope just a vortec truck engine

Pity. If it was an eco it probably could have been adapted. Imagine the M62 setup from the SS on that beast.

the oil pan looks cloe but i don't think so

what a blob of an intake manifold, i like the crazy long oil dip stick.

not an ecotec but that would be sweet if installed on a cobalt.

I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow to find trans am seats. Will see if they have any colorado's to snap a pic of the part numbers on the head

Don't all ecotecs have the drop in filters? If so, that's a giveaway right there.

Thats actually an Atlas, which is GMs current family of straight engines for trucks and other high torque/low rpm usage. There are a lot of similarities between them and the ecos. evolutionary divergence basicly.

THATS the engine chevrolet should have used in the SS

Imagine the torque that engine would put down supercharged.

It has a 3.8 X 4.0 Bore/Stroke

What are the major differences between the two infin?

I wonder what the rod to stroke ratio is. Probably couldn't rev high enough for the SS.

The straight-4 LLV engine is sold as the Vortec 2900 in GM trucks. It shares the same 95.5 mm bore and 102 mm stoke as the LLR Vortec 3700. The LLV displaces 2.9 L and produces 185 hp (138 kW) @ 5600 RPM and 195 ft·lbf (263 N·m) @ 2800 RPM. Engine redline is 6300 RPM.

Thats what it is. Basically a slight bump up in size and power from the LK5 (the 2.8L I4). Their a little higher reving them the V8s, but still limited by their design.

But they do produce a hell of a lot of torque in a very flat curve. From ~2k all the way to 5.5k rpms the engine is putting out 175+ lbs of torque.

Atlas is a name for a family of modern inline piston engines for trucks from General Motors. In production, the engines use GM's Vortec name, and I4, I5, and I6 engines are all part of the same family, sharing the same manufacturing equipment, rods, pistons, valves, and other parts. They feature variable valve timing on the exhaust side, electronic throttle control, and a special oil pan with a pass-through for the half shafts in four-wheel drive vehicles.

The Atlas program began in 1995 along with the planning for GM's next-generation mid-size SUVs and pickup trucks. These vehicles were designed around the I6 engine. The I6 version was used in a Baja 2000 racing truck, winning its first race in a class that also included V8 engines. Another I6-powered truck won the truck class at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.

Oh yea, although they rev higher, 5.5~5.6k is the top of their cam. The grind they use is designed to start building lots of torque down low and hold it.

However, if you built one out of aluminum, balanced it a little better to rev higher, put a cam that traded some torque for more top end in there, etc... well... you would pretty much have a 2.9L eco with only half way VVT. Well, close but not quiet, since they have been developing separately for over 10 years now.

FUCK trading low end torque for top end power. If you could supercharge this engine with an M62 you could easily see gobs and gobs of low end torque. Make 260-280lbs of torque at 2000-5250 and like 260-280 at 6000rpm would be PERFECT.

Nope. Look at the oil filter. It's on the bottom.

On the Eco...well the 2.2 and 2.4's, the belt only goes around the crank, alternator, a/c, and tensioner. The power steering pump is driven off the intake cam. On that motor...not so much.

They have an I4 and an I5. Actually when I went up to pick up my Cobalt Wednesday, my tech buddy had the head off of one of the I4's. I got a chance to check it out. They are pretty simalar to our Eco's but they surely aren't the same.

I wonder if head is just different or the blocks could be interchanged.

the atlas series includes an I4 I5 and I6. they are all very simular to each other

The Atlas and Ecotec are divergences of the same family as I said earlier. One of the big differences though is that the Atlas is designed for RWD applications, while the Ecotec is designed for FWD applications.

And trust me, if you want to make it a performance engine your going to change the cams and push the torque curve higher up the RPM band. Plus do a whole lot of work to help the engine rev better. As it is now, it doesn't rev nearly fast enough to be a performance engine and really you won't take it above about 3.5~4k rpms.

Also, their a whole lot taller then the Ecotecs.

that is the 3.5 liter in-line 5 engine out of the chevy colorado. it is also used in the hummer h3. it is rated at 220 hp.

indeed...

that thing is h-u-g-e for a 4-banger... 2.9L might as well be a V-6.

And who the crap makes an I-5 engine anyways?

vortec is in the intake manifold. basically means that the intake manifold creates a vortex...which a vortex creates vacuum so it theoretically pulls a bit more air in because of the vortex.

Thing about the Atlas engines is, they aren't really a Vortec engine. Their sold under that brand, but their a totally different design. Of course, Vortec is mostly just used to describe truck engines now a days.

Thats what I was thinking as well...however, seeing VORTEC in the plastic kind of gave it away first...

thats not why they call em vortec engines. vortec is just a name, just like ecotec.

according to that, he is still wrong. they claim it creates a vortex in the combustion chamber, not the intake manifold.

its all a marketing ploy anyways, the motors just utilize a different intake runner and combustion chamber style. gm had been using better designed combustion chambers in much of the fwd stuff, they didnt start calling them vortec motors.

vortec is just a name, its still just a small block chevy, and they still all get poor ass fuel economy (st least the 4.3 and gen 2 smallblocks did, the gen 3 truck motors are better).

i have that in my colorado it went 16.7 in the quater its a bad ass engine lol.

let me tell you a little something there raeally slow reving and have 0 low end TQ but as soon as you hit 4500 rpms its like fucking V-tak
