Aftermarket Throw Out Bearing

where can i pick one up for the SS? my mechanic looked at the parts i had for my clutch, and he said i was missing the bearing which i already knew, and i said im gunna order a GM bearing, he said not to and get a high performance one, since im going high performance on the clutch. So besides the GM bearings is there a different one i could get?

bump

When I got my clutch kit (clutchmasters fx400) it came with the stock gm one....thats what all the kits use i believe since our throwout/ release bearing is hydraulic...........

yeah my SPEC, did not come with one (when every site on every vendor says it does), when you installed the stock GM one did you have any problems after?

nobody makes an aftermarket one, the bearing is built as part of the slave and the only option is the oem one.

I'd be lying if I said I don't have problems......my clutch drives fine.....engages and disengages fine....it just makes a knocking noise which is likely bc of me installing it.....I know other ppl on here that run the same clutch as me (stage 4) and use the stock one with no problems.......so don't let that discourage you from getting it.....

It is not overly important to change the slave/throw out bearing on our cars, but the old school rule of thumb is if you are changing the clutch change the bearing. I put my spec stage 3 in and purchased a new slave/throwout bearing as well. The one I took out of the car was almost falling apart. Now that was probably because of that piece of ***** CM FX400 clutch paired up with a fidanza fly.

Unfortunately there isn't an after market set up for our cars you will have to purchase a new slave/throwout bearing from the dealer.

cheers

Well seeing as I live in Canada and at the time there were only three in all of Canada that were spoken for I ordered mine from the states and had it overnight shipped to my door and it still cost less than what the dealers were selling it for in Canada. haha

I paid around 89 US + shipping (next day) = about 169 US

Here in Canada it was something like 250 CAD.

I phoned a dealer that I normally deal with in the states and they did not have one so he did a nation wide search and printed then faxed the list of all the dealers in the states that had one and I phoned the closest one and paid using my MC and it was here at 8 AM the next morning.

Cheers

You can get a GM one for about $80.

IF SPEC did include it in their kit, it would just be a GM one, no one makes a "high performance" one.

My SS/SC was the first one bought in Canada and one of the first with the gen 1 FX400 which did not work well with the Fidanza fly. It was sort of one of those things where you become the guinea pig and go for it. and when it finally went it almost cost a cop his life and sent me to jail. There is a post about the whole story somewhere on here.

I went with specs stage 3 not the 3+ combo clutch/flywheel. I talked to the guys at spec and they suggested it because of the hydrolic clutch in our cars and the low tolerances.

I did about three months of research. The shop I bought it through here in Calgary also suggested the same clutch combo.

cheers

Call Crate Engine Depot for one. The local stealership will charge way more for it! Trust me on this one. Make sure everytime you replace the clutch you replace the slave cylinder too. My buddy Mike found out the hard way and had to take his car all apart again just to replace it! The stock one will work fine with aftermarket clutches as it works great with my Exedy Hypersingle 6-Puck. Good luck with the install.

The slave cylinder and throw out bearing are a single unit.

Get the part number from the dealership. Tranny is the MU3/F35. I'd tell you what it is, but I deployed right now.

Just to let you know, pulled my tranny today...my release bearing was bad (as I thought bc of a terrible knock that I had at idle that went away everytime I held in the clutch pedal) and I installed a new release bearing/ slave cylinder......worked great, drove on it all afternoon with no knocks...then, tonight did a few harder launches where i dumped the clutch, and sure enough its back (the knock) already...I emailed Clutchmasters tonight and mentioned this thread in hopes that they will look into designing a better solution than the OEM crap that we have now........The problem I found with mine was that the release bearing/ slave was building too much hydraulic pressure when loading it for launches at the strip or wherever....and it caused the boot to separate on the end where it meets the bearing....and the slave was leaking out the rear a little......this will happen everytime if you launch your car hard.....so a solution needs to be found.....the tranny is too much of a b**ch to pull out/ put in...to keep replacing a release bearing that will go out pretty much the first time you launch the car hard....the clutch is doing great though, I've had it in for almost 20k miles now, and it still has plenty of disc life...and I mean plenty....of life left.....
