Dual Pass Question?!!!!
It is a noob question i suppose but ive searched through the forums but still want to know. I was wondering exactly what it does(and what's IAT2) and wether its worth the money?
oh and since its a GM part wouldn't it be warrantied?

yes, should be warrantied if its installed by a GM technician. The dual pass endplate allows coolant to flow through the manifold more efficiently, allowing it to cool the IAT2 (intake temp 2 explained above) better than with the original endplate. Originally the manifold has a 4 tube pass system, this cuts it in half where the coolant runs in the middle two tubes and out the upper and lower tubes allowing it to be a 2 pass system.(hard to describe without illustration)
This dual pass helps since w/ the stock 4 pass system the coolant gets heated up each pass it makes in the manifold and it will finally become too hot to efficiently cool air on the 4th tube or so. With the dual pass, cool coolant comes in two seperate tubes and out the two outer tubes and they share the amount of heat which is absorbed instead of heating one stream continuously.

Actually, during the build-up of the competition LSJ's, they tested this modification to the endplate to see if they could reduce heatsoak. It worked, so they included it into the GMS3 kit and offered it as a performance accessory.
EDIT: Found this in the 300hp LSJ Build Book
This engine was a testbed for the GM
Performance Stage 3 upgrade kit (see P/N
listing at the end of this chapter) now available
at your GM dealer. The GM Powertrain
Ecotec LSJ engineers were testing a modified
intercooler (on right) to determine if turning it
into a two-pass intercooler would help make
power. What they found was that above 240
hp, the dual-pass intercooler helps to maintain
the high levels of intake charge cooling—
which is one of the key parts of the
Stage 3 system. As a result, a 2-pass intercooler
endplate is now available from GM
Performance Parts (P/N 88958721).

thank for the info and explanation guys and i will be thinking of buying one when i get the monet
in reality, they dont need a dual pass for a stock motor. like already stated, it was developed during an engine build up, worked, so it got built for sale as a gm performance part.
my question with this is, do you need the option b surge tank, or is that an additional accessory? i'm interested in the dual pass and option b, but if i can get just the endplate, i'll pick it up sooner.
not using the option B surge tank adds another step to the installation process (as described above). also, running the second surge tank allows you to run more coolant, which would in turn help keep coolant temperatures lower.
