2008 SS/TC Stage kits
Hi everyone ,this is a conversation I was having with one of the editors of of GM tuner and thought I would pass it along....
I asked a question to one of the editors of GMblogs.com about the Stage 1,2,3 kits and I thought the readers would like to know. Here is the conversation:
ECOtec Racing Technical Question from http://tunersource.gmblogs.com.
The question sent was:
Hi I am wondering if the '08 cobalt turbo will come out with the stage 1,2,3 kits available as an option? thanks so much.... P.S. its killing me to wait for it

Her answer was:
Hi, Joe-
That hasn't been announced yet. If something does come out, I don't think there will be three kits. The performance of the production LNF engine is already approaching the limit of the F35 manual transmission. With more power, the trans may not meet the level of reliability and longevity we require for a warranty. Plus, the car is pretty good as-is. The Launch Mode with shift-no-lift is way cool. I couldn't believe it when I drove it.

Anyway good find
well, common sense, stage one would be a trans upgrade so it could handle more hp from a stage 2 kit, though I'm not gonna say much, my plan is to leave it as is other than maybe a cai and exaust untill I re-build the engine and upgrade the trans, by the time I get the cash to do that, the car will be paid off and the aftermarket tuners will have caught up with it so I can get 100% potential out of it
Makes sense. Even in the official GM documents, the tranny has a max torque rating of 260lb/ft - which is right around what the LNF makes. Some LSJ guys have already blown their tranny making just 270lb/ft or so.
lol...this may be a noob Q but are there better trannies we can get to allow for more hp? I realize that'd be super expensive, but still...
also, what's the weak point on the tranny, the clutch, or something else?

1. The casing.
2. The teeth on the gears.
3. Its made of soft metal, alumn.
The Quiafe 6 speed conversion gearset is apparently 25% stronger than the stock gears. The kit costs 4 grand without installation so there hasn't been much, if any user feedback on it so far.
As far as I know the Quiafe 6 speed is the way to go if you want over 300whp. IMO the stock tranny's are junk. 25% stronger is what they should of been from factory. The F/I cobalts have a strong engine but that means nothing with a weak tranny.
What would you suggest be the route to fix the tranny?

oh hey, what a coincidence.. didn't i start a thread about that months ago?
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...&highlight=f35
so...it looks like no one is really sure about what this tranny can really handle...there must be something to the fact that some are able to get 350+ out of the f23...and others can't push past 240 with the f35....but what is it? driver error? or setup issues? or simply manufcaturer differences?
I think chevy will do 1 of 2 things here...either have to man up and work something our for the tranny/TQ situation, or they'll bitch out and leave it as is, which will ruin the car for everyone, including chevy, and make it a dud. I hope it's option #1...but if corporate thinking in the past is anything to go by...
well that I will definitely agree with you about. it sounds like it's gonna have some SERIOUS growing pains for the first 2 years or so, and if it makes it out of that it'll either be a lost cause or a pretty decent machine. I'm still sticking with my idea that it should be a 2.4L turbocharged SS with all wheel drive sti/evo killer
