my point is people can do whatever they want with any car.. who cares if a cobalt isn't designed for corners or drag racing if it can match the performance of cars that WERE meant to?

the issues is people bitching that drag racing the cobalt is stupid.

i can tell you right now that the EVO wasn't meant for drag racing either. does it make it stupid if someone decides to use it's AWD advantage for that purpose?

the answer is no.

so who are people to say that the cobalt should't be used for drag racing either despite it's FWD disadvantage. it can still be just as quick as a RWD car if setup correctly.

if people still want to argue the point, then tell them to talk to all the RWD V8 owners at that strip that got their asses handed to them by a 4 cylinder general purpose car.

I've been to AutoBahn in Joliet,Il and Road America in WI and have seen Cobalts beat up all day on EVo's and STI's. The Cobalt SS Turbo/Supercharged were designed with a track in mind. **** look a the ring times! You think GM just decided to say hey lets take the Cobalt out and run around? No, they wanted to prove that the Cobalt was a big competitor on the track. But this argument could go all day, neither of us are GM Big Wigs so our opinion means nothing, to each their own! haha

I'd agree with that. If anything, GM Developed the SS/TC for the track. To be honest, any type of racing would benefit from a lighter car, with the exception of a top speed competition.

Just thinking out loud here, but not having HIDs would result in a lighter car, right? You wouldn't have the balasts and projectors. I know they don't weigh much, but it's something that isn't really necessary.

I was talking about this the other day with local evo owners. Couple of the guys bought JDM fog delete kits. I was asking how much weight it saves and they laughed..lol. With oem fog lights in the evo it cuts off maybe 2-3lbs but with hids and the ballasts, probably close to 5lbs as well as it opens up the vents for cooler air to the oilcooler(s) and brakes. Although with a cobalt you guys dont have that option.

my buddy and i have been working on his 84 firebird for the last few years and lately he's been cutting a significant amount of weight out.

Lightweight carpet without any backing
cutting the front support out and welding a pipe in place of it, basically (which in this case is stronger than it was stock!) ((this car was pulling tires already, mind you!))
seriously light wheels, meaning skinny light wheels in front to make up for the fat ones in the back
mini tub
2 kirky racing seats (omg so light!)
got rid of power steering, different shaft and k-member in place of it (THIS cut a good 30 lbs off)
coilovers
basically cutting off all the excess framework and bodywork b.s that doesnt add to the structure of the car and welding **** in place of it

he hasn't re-weighed it yet but plans for it to be less than 3000 lbs, perhaps with him in it!
