mine went out on me last year was pretty fun driving to the dealer with no power steering
so with the recall will they just replace if something is messed up or will they upgrade everything? dunno if its worth going to the dealer yet or not.

The rattle is a different issue. GM has already gone after the company who manufactures our column and are suing for damages. Long story short GM's claimed the quality is so **** poor that they've lost millions in replacements and they want to recoup it.

Apparently the company that makes our steering columns is partially owned by TOYOTA! They're trying to bring us down with them!

Well, i had brought in my car last year, because my steering motor which is located under the dash on driver side, adjacent to where the clutch pedal is (it looks like a cylinder), was leaking fluid and droping on my foot!!! all they did was tighten it to the housing and said it was not leaking anymore, and that it is not the motor, it is a pivot point that holds grease??? what a joke, now gathering what im reading, that motor, comes with a whole unit assembly. What gm is gathering up and trying to do, is just replace that motor(the black cylinder). Which is the easier fix, and would take 5 minutes to replace, since its just 2 bolts.

On the Toyota angle I'd say it's a good case of sensational journalism jumping on the now popular anti-Toyota bandwagon. While Toyota owns part of some and wholly owns other suppliers that sell to other automakers (like Aisin transmissions), they also use some of the same suppliers as GM, Ford, Nissan, and many other automakers, some of which are owned or partially owned by those other automakers. At the end of the day if you tracked down where every part in your car came from the global automakers would look like one big inbred family.

just got off the phone with my local chevy dealer....they knew nothing of the recall yet. I gave him the link to the GM website with the story, and the service adviser said about time they did it...lol. Seems they have had a quite a few cobalts in there for this problem.
Then he asked me how many miles are on my car, which is just over 36k. He said hurry up and bring it to him this week, and he will get all the other little problems(outside temp sensor is bad, blower motor clicking, drivers side door handle paint came off, trunk rattles, and so on), fixed under warranty for me.
Also got my phone number and will call me when they get the official paperwork from GM about the recall and get me fixed up. Man this dealer is awesome....(Award Chevrolet in Crestview, FL)
A few months ago I brought my S10 in for a misfire I could not hunt down, got a complete injection service done, only charged my 1hr of labor, then 2 days later got a call from the OWNER of the dealer asking me if it fixed it and was I happy with the results....this place is awesome....

I would think the Ion and the HHR use the same column but perhaps they haven't had the same failure rate for whatever reason. We'll have to take a look at the official recall bulletin once it is released.

Mine went out at 40k.. I replaced it on my own.. so far so good on the new motor.. :-\
I drove it without powersteering for a couple months though.. not something that should cause a wreck.. When it kicks out the car alarms and flashes power steering on the DIC, so you shouldnt be suprized by it either..

The local news reported this morning that the part is from a Toyota manufacturer that was used also by the GM / Toyota joint venture group. Lesson Learned ---- Build our parts in North America!!
