I wouldn't use Castrol. This thread tells why:https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...ht=castrol+gtx

I know it talks about Castrol GTX and not Syntec, but if GM bans them, so do I.

I switched from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple after I heard about Mobil 1 not being 100% synthetic anymore. Plus I can get Royal Purple cheaper for some reason. I'm running the K&N oil filter this time, so when I go to change hopefully it won't have as much crush as the AC Delco filters do.

Yes, Castrol sucks. There is lots of proof that it is junk.

The problem with Mobil 1 isnt' that it isn't 100% synthetic anymore... it is that they switched the regular Mobil 1 from a group 4 base stock to a group 3. I use the extended life Mobil 1 which is still made from group 4 base stock.

Amsoil and Royal Purple are both good oils to use, and both made from group 4 base stock.

SERVICE LIFE
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline fueled vehicles as follows:

• Normal Service(3) – Up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

• Replace AMSOIL Ea oil filter at the time of oil change up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first (other brands at standard OEM* intervals).

• In all non-gasoline fueled vehicle applications, extend the oil change interval according to oil analysis or follow the OEM* drain interval.

*OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer

(1) Engines operating under modified conditions are excluded from extended drain recommendations. Examples include the use of performance computer chips; non-OEM approved exhaust, fuel or air induction systems; and the use of fuels other than those recommended for normal operation by the manufacturer.

(2) Mechanically sound engines are in good working condition and do not, for example, leak oil or consume excessive amounts, are not worn out, do not overheat, do not leak anti-freeze and have properly working emission control systems. AMSOIL recommends repairing malfunctioning engines prior to the installation of AMSOIL synthetic oils.

(3) Personal vehicles frequently traveling greater than 10 miles (16 km) at a time and not operating under severe service.

(4) Turbo/supercharged vehicles, commercial or fleet vehicles, extensive engine idling, first and subsequent use of AMSOIL in vehicles with over 100,000 miles, daily short trip driving less than 10 miles (16 km), frequent towing, plowing, hauling or dusty condition driving.

AMSOIL Ea full-flow oil filters are designed for extended drain intervals. They stop smaller particles, flow more oil and last longer than regular filters. For best performance, use AMSOIL full-flow oil filters.

This product is not expected to cause health concerns when used for the intended application and according to the recommendations in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). An MSDS is available upon request at 715-392-7101 or on the AMSOIL Website.

Amsoil is pricy, for 10 qts (7 for the monte and 3 for extra) and the filter, ran right at 100 bucks, but they guarentee there product for like 100,000 miles if you engine grenades and you can prove its was do to sludging or oil related, they will pay IN FULL to repair/replace.

And in the Hemi Ram, i use mobil 1 because ams doesnt make 5-20 yet and i run an amsoil filter, you can see the difference at oilchanging time.

yeah, but hell...a conservative 12,000 would be awesome, with maybe a filter change at the halfway point

That thread you linked to was a real comedy.

BTW Castrol GTX is back on GM's approved list.

I don't think it's the same as mobil 1 anymore. They did some sort of analysis and it doesn't look the same. In fact they say it may be recycled oil...um...bad news.

Brands I want to try but am too lazy to track down: Torco, Greddy, Motul, Redline, (does lucas make 5w30, then them too).

Anyone with a 2.0 use oil additive for a quart?

Yeah, SuperTech uses whatever oil they get cheapest at the time. Could be from Mobil, could be from Pennzoil, could be recycled. It is just as bad as Castrol and I wouldn't trust to put it in my car ever.
