How to fix the Sunroof Trim Ring

I have few pictures, sorry, I know, gotta get more. If I get more sometime I'll edit the thread. But here ya go.

The plastic trim ring from GM has two locking tabs on each side that engage the metal clip attached to the headliner. That metal clip also suports the actual sunroof switch.

You have tried to push the ring back onto the clip, and the switch just pops out, right? Well here ya go...

Pop the switch out and lower it down out of the headliner. Just let it hang for a moment. Open the sunroof to give you more room to work.

Now remove the the rubber trim surrounding the actual sunroof opening.

It's not hard, and don't worry, you can't screw anything up. Just pull it. You only have to remove it from the front, you don't have to take it off completely, but if you do, no problem. This gives you access to the back side of the headliner. Don't pull the headliner down anymore then you have to. Just enough. Too much could crease the headliner.

Now, there are two tabs on the clip that hold the switch in place. Bend those in toward each other just a little bit to assure a good grab on the switch housing. Then, very simply, push the switch back into place on the clip. It should bottom out and not be able to go any further in. You will notice the switch has serrations on the sides to engage the metal tabs, and you will hear it clicking as you push the switch into place.

Now back to the trim ring.

The two plastic tabs are just slightly a little too big for the holes in the clip. Use a fresh razor blade, and slice off about a millimeter from each side of each tab, thereby making it just a little more narrow. THIS IS THE KEY STEP.

Now, with access to the back side of the headliner, use a long screwdriver or just your hand if you can reach to push with.

You will see the sunroof actuator, your On-Star mic if you are so equipped, and the switch. Place the trim ring into position on the clip, and squeeze the headliner and trim ring together. If you only push up, you just pop the switch out again. Engage one of the tabs first, then the other. Don't try to do both at the same time.

Reinstall your headliner rubber gasket. Your done.

Fixed mine, I had to do some bending of the metal clips on the side that accept the bezel. The holes were actually too big in my situation.

No, this is just for the trim ring around the sunroof switch. You might want to check that everything is aligned properly and view the sunroof opening and closing from different angles to see what it may be rubbing on.

WOW

My wife and I would joke about it and say GM put a camera in there to watch us while we drive.

but wow
I've had a lot of issues with the plastic that goes around my Sunroof Button falling off and hitting my hand while driving.

the problem with the bezels is that the bracket's tabs are rounded and the clips on the bezel or straight. i'll do up a quick paint picture to demonstrate.

I know this is an old thread but I recently bought a 06 ss and the sunroof button was sideways and one day I pushed on it trying to fix it and messed it all up.. and when I took the the trim piece off the clips broke so i'm gonna try and super glue them back on to the piece. Anyone shed light on how exactly and where the sunroof button metal clips line up on the switch?

Yea, it worked. Purchased new bezel and was going to get more stuff to fix it. After seeing pictures and reading about it. Then pulling the headliner out and seeing it, no prob. Its fixed. Thank you Halfcent for the pics.

I’ve attempted this thrice for about 5 minutes each time since I️ never want to crease my headliner. Sub’d too.
