Since nobody has a good how to on this, I decided to take my car apart and take pictures along the way, enjoy.

Step 1: Pull the release tabs for the rear seats


Step 2: Pull out the 2 pop in plastic tabs


Step 3: Remove each side’s individual C-Panel (By simply slipping your fingers in on the top and pull straight out, they are secured on by a plastic wire that is just there to hold them there in place, you can move the panel of your way and tuck it under the seat belt if you want.


FYI: Watch out for the rear defroster units, make sure not to hit those off when taking the panel off.

Step 4: Remove the plastic cover behind each headrest and unbolt the two bolts securing them

Step 5: You should now be able to lift the rear deck enough to work underneath and access the rear speakers (don’t worry if you bend it, when you put it back down and put everything back together it will return to its original form.


Here are the speaker wire colors for the base cobalt system:
LF Speaker +tan / -gray
RF Speaker +lt. green / - dk. green
LR Speaker +brown / - yellow
RR Speaker +dk. blue / - lt. blue

TIP: When putting the C-Panels back on, make sure you align it up with all the indents along the side (see picture above) do this before you pop the panel back in place!

Okay So now replace your speakers and put everything back in reverse order and enjoy.

Try not to pull the rear panel towards the front toooo much or you will break off the clips that hold the rear of the panel to the base of the window. I done mine that way on my Yellow one when I changed out my speakers now it has a bit of a rattle to it. Those clips are not replaceable either. they are heat staked on.

Yea I broke one of mine too and I got the lovely rattle now. Any ideas on how to fix it? Maybe some foam tape at the back? Or just hope there is a cobalt at the wreckers with one intact...

one little add...if you work your way around the rear deck and undo all the click you can slide the rear deck down the seat belts...and its totally out of your way.

The speakers are 6x9? I've been reading on here that its too expensive to replace stock radio (due to extra parts needed) so I'm just gonna do the speakers for now.

Yeah the rear speakers are 6x9, fronts are 6 1/2

First thing I gotta do is pop out those small covers on the front when I lower the seats, and then just unscrew the headrest covers? Thats it? I've had the car for 4 days and have not had the chance to look at it. I did see some Alpine speakers at BB for 114.99

i fixed the rattle with 2 calculus textbooks that i placed up on the deck. i just take em out at the track!

You could also just try sticking towles underneath it. I had done the book thing for awhile, then used towels underneath it. Worked perfect.

with the deck lid off fill any hole that goes to the trunk with like...soft but firm foam. also you will see two sets of wires that get grounded on the passenger side. put some foam under these to support them from shaking too much under bass excursion. on the sides you can reach around and feel u around and you'll notice it's hollow. put some foam up in there too. after u install your 6x9's and your putting the deck back, you'll see directly in the center underneath a black foam block already attached. put some towels under it. about half an inch of more worth. it should be ever so slightly flexing up. ensure the side "clips" of the rear deck are latched firmly to the sides. now get like 5 rubber pegs(clear preferrably) and place them between the rear deck and the rear glass firmly.

now go into your trunk, and fill the remaining open truck holes which lead to the rear deck.
