After reading this post, I think everyone who hasn't had a chance to ride in a tuned diesel should find somebody and try it. They are the absolute definition of tq over hp. It jerks your head back on a clumsy shift, and it will pin your head back when you're on it- but it doesn't really feel like you're going fast. Usually the torque is down pretty low to get you moving and you rarely operate over 2500-3000 rpm even though the tach goes to 4500.

And Turbo Diesels tune like no gas car can, and it's common. Most people who have modern TD's have a tune on them. The tunes are usually multi-mode where you have economy, tow-economy, max-tow, and max-performance or some combo like that.

It's not unusual to find a TD with a 4 inch exhaust and a tuning program running 750-900 tq to the wheels, but only 330 hp or so. Because TD's don't rely on spark, it's pretty much a matter of pushing more air and TD's will take a lot of air. The biggest issue for most regular tuned TD pickups- (not racers, work trucks) is they have to keep an eye on the exhaust gas temp when they are under heavy load going up hills.

I really wish car manufacturers would put the torque curves on the sticker or at least make it available somewhere. Peak HP/Torque only give you a snap shot of the car's performance. Though, if they were to put torque curves on stickers I think it would confuse people more than anything else.

Yeah I agree with you. I like the fact that the TC has a torque curve that's nice and even.

Salesman don't even know what the numbers posted mean and how they're calculated .

So having this information would be so much more confusing for the consumer who already doesn't quite understand the HP/TQ differences (unless they're buying a sports car, etc.).

Yoru everyday person for the most part wouldn't know what it meant if it were on there. Torque and the type of torque curve are very important in everyday cars that often cruise around in low RPMS.

The TC does have an awesome torque curve.

^QFT

I don't know many 4-bangers that happily cruise around at like 2k RPM like this one does.

The amount it has down low is stunning, especially for a 4 cyl. Even the LS has a much higher torque rating than other cars in it's class.

If it came out with those numbers I'd take the torque. Cause then you can say "oh it only has 300hp" and smoke the hell outta them at the track.

Torque is funner, that's why I don't drive a high winding import. I love spinning the tires with ease.
