LS1 Swap

I want to know if a ls1 would actually be able to fit in our engine bay possibly with no firewal modifying. Also, other than a rwd swap, t-56 swap, new motor mounts, what would you need in order to swap this engine in?

hmm what about a 5.3 .... i think it's called the ls3 or ls4. That's already made for FWD vehicles too

Look at the size of a cobalt engine bay. And then look at any V8. Then think to yourself how in the F could you fit one in there without some MAJOR cutting.

factor in the size, extra weight, and all the custom fabbing involved.... if you can find a way to get it to work, which it won't, it's going to be an assload of work

I'm thinking it can be done. I'll be measuring my engine bay, all parameters, and trying to find a smashed impala/gxp/monte ss and steal the motor mounts, tranny, and the engine. This will be after I come back from FL though. I'll let you guys know though of what I find out about this. I know there will be cutting, I just don't want the firewall touched

The ls1 is a pretty small engine if you look at the external dimissions. It has been put into miatas and soltices already. Though it will require a lot of work. Not sure if it will require cutting the firewall or not.

That isn't to mention the 10,000 other things you may have to change to make your car capable of handling the V8... and that you'd have to totally replace every single component to make the engine work.
Almost be easier just taking an old 70-something unibody chopping it and putting a Cobalt shell on top.

If you're making a drag car which is the only reason I can think of doing this and not just BUYING a car with a V8, you'd want to gut every last thing out of it anyhow.. so might as well go for a sturdier steel frame.

I'm told people are taking the 3500(G6 motor) top end and bolting it onto the 3400 bottom end and making a kickass hybrid.

So get a 3400 and a head from a 3500 and have some fun. RWD is fun but in this car not practical.

^^ Agreed, but with a V8 in such a light car, you'd just rip the tires off if you left it FWD i think.
That's why the whole idea is slightly insane.

I want to see this tried. I think it would be one of the most innovative projects on the site. You could definitely get some attention for doing this.

A 3.8 V6 from a Grand Prix is a very tight fit. You would need to do major modification to the Cobalt to get a LS1 to fit.

I was thinking of a 3.8 engine as well. But I don't know. My ecotec is crap. I don't know what's wrong with it. And if i'm going to get a new engine, I might as well see if I have enough funds for a bigger swap (ls4, ls1, maybe ls2). I have quite a few bucks put away, enough for a swap belive it or not, but I don't know if I want to do a silly swap or actually buy a NEW camaro with a warranty lol

You probably also want to think about maintenance. Do you really want to have to work on it when its done? Spark plugs on my 5.0 V8 in my Mustang is a pain and the engine bay in that is a lot bigger than the bay of a Cobalt. You'd probably have to pull the motor just to change a water pump... or at least take a fender off.

EDIT: I've only seen one 3800 Supercharged V6 Cavalier transplant... and I do remember they had to bang away at the firewall. Of course the Cobalt isn't the same shape, but its probably fairly similar as far as engine bay dimensions go.

the guy at the NHRA career day event (mechanic of that RWD V8 cobalt i was talkin about) said it cost about $100,000 to do it all, so you can have fun with that while i have fun in a Z06 and play with the change
