New guy. No Cobalt.. yet.
Hey all.
I'm looking at trying to get a new car VERY soon. I'm looking at a fun, modifiable daily and the SS/TC seems like an amazing car to fill those shoes.
I'm currently stuck debating between a SS/TC and MS6. Completely different cars, I know. But the Cobalt seems to be more promising in terms or reliability, ease of making power, and fuel economy. Only thing the Speed6 has on the 'Balt is the interior.
Any glaring reliability issues or recalls that should be addressed on the Turbalts? From reading around the forum it seems that there isn't really much that goes wrong on these cars.
Also, looking at the official dyno threads makes my mouth water at how easy it is to get power out of these cars, even on the K04.
Thanks for any advice and input that you guys may have. I have read a lot of the stickies in the various forum sections, but if you have any other interesting threads to read, I'd appreciate a link.
Thank you!

*EDIT* Should also note, I come from the world of supercharged 3800s, so I have HPT at my disposal. I'm sure that'll help with tuning.

My .02
MS6 is nice. AWD + 2.3L Turbo is great. However its hard to find them not beat on. The rear differential is garbage and their k04 is smaller than ours
The SS/TC is a great car for what it is. Do not expect a Cadillac ride quality, or Audi road noise quietness but its quick, gets good gas mileage and is cheap to mod/repair.
I made 348/457 on E85 tune.

Because no fuel is sprayed on the intake valves over time they get gunked up (oil being blown back into the intake) and need to be cleaned anything over even 40k could probably use being cleaned there is a vendor that sells a solution though for $350 it's well worth it.

Thanks for the input so far guys! The HPT has to stay with me XP
The MZR motor has the same issue with dirty valves causing performance issues. They run an oil catch can which supposedly eliminates the problem, along with EGR delete.
Nailed it on the MS6s. I cannot find any clean ones around the Chicago area, all that I've driven were beaten or they needed a new turbo.
How are the clutches/trans on the TC? Does it handle the increased power from bolt on and alternate fueling like E85?

Still on stock turbo I made 359whp/418wtq fully bolted on stock engine, clutch and tranny.
Don't worry about the trans unless you go bigger turbo. Clutch depends on driver; mine looked "brand new" when it came off after 35,000 miles including serious abuse (my mechanic's words, not mine).
Anything suspension related turn to John Powell. Thread of all the goodies he offers here:
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/gene...powell-296456/
Full E85 at sea level could be problematic without fueling upgrades. E47offers similar results. Ethanol really wakes up these cars. Especially on the torque side
Any other questions, just throw em up here. Lots of knowledgeable guys- and some of us even have a decent personality ;-)
Have fun with the car!

Sounds good. Luckily E85 is easy to find in the midwest cause of all our corn. Hahaha
It's also a nice feeling knowing that the trans will take the abuse of added power, unlike some other platforms... *cough* 3800 *cough*
Nonetheless, I'm excited to get into one of these cars. This weekend I am checking out three Cobalts. One black with the red theme interior, one silver with the black interior, and one white with the white interior. All under 60,000 miles and all under about $15,000. Should be interesting. As far as I can tell, the only differences between them are the colors, and the silver one does not have the high rise wing on the deck lid... Which I'm not sure if I like yet.
Time will tell.
Thanks for all the advice and wise words so far.

Look for the g85 package, it comes with an lsd trans. You can find the tag in your trunk search around for pictures of its location.
Also I'm not an lnf but I see a lot of people going through trans from 3rd gear spike pulls and going through the 2 bar sensors, mainly when modded. Just something to keep in mind. I see a lot of people either swap in a lsj trans, or grab some 4.45 gears it go zzp 6 speed swap eventually.
Anyway welcome!

As for the high rise spoiler, mine came with the low rise but everyone with the high rise complains about limited visibility. Just something to keep in mind. I second trying to find a 2010. They have upgraded injector seals that'll take ethanol blends and they come with more stock goodies such as the RPD and sunroof.

Unfortunately only one of them is 2010. I'll have to check whether or not they have limited slip diff. I've never had a sunroof so I could go either way on that option.
What is RPD?
I might have to wait around for a 2010. There aren't any decent ones in the area.

RPD is a multi function gauge that is a little computer screen on the A pillar. It does boost, wideband, timing and knock, cam timing, HP torque, Gs and speed, shiftlight, tire pressure, coolant temp, ambiant temp, baro, fuel pressure, battery volts I think that is it but I may have missed one

It sounds really cool but doesn't sound like a deal breaker. Practically a factory Aeroforce!
After some searching, I think it looks kinda goofy in the A pillar spot as opposed to the boost gauge.

I love my rpd. Gets comments when people first ride if it's aftermarket. And I use the Kph digital display so I don't have to look at my gauge cluster to see my speed.
