ZZP ZFR Turbo (Borg Warner EFR 6758)

I’m selling my used ZZP-ZFR Turbo (Borg Warner EFR 6758). The turbo will need to be rebuilt due to excessive shaft play. I took it off and ended up installing a new ZFR after I found that I could hear it whining down after shutting the engine off (bearings were noticeably noisy without the engine running) and it was only boosting to about 15 PSI (tune was set for 24 PSI). The housings and turbines are not trashed as I didn’t use the car more than 100 miles after I noticed the symptoms. I’m not a racer so my car does not see the track. The turbo was on the car for about 18,000 miles.

Everything is included (coolant lines, oil feed fitting, and all bolts) except for the oil feed line. The pictures show everything you get. You can purchase a steel braided oil line at most auto part websites (jegs, summit racing, ebay, etc.) or get one from ZZP directly. The line ZZP usually includes is about 12” in length.

I did the installation myself and Matt from ZZP tuned it personally. My install was documented which you can check out at the link below if you want.

I’m asking for $300 shipped (any of the 48 states). I have not checked, but I’m hoping the buyer can get the turbo rebuilt for $1000 or less. I figured having the buyer get it rebuilt instead of me will allow them to have a warranty for the shop/website that does the rebuild.

You could also just use it for the ZZP exhaust housing if you have your own EFR turbo you want to make bolt on. ZZP sells them for $500, but it looks like they’re currently sold out.

Okay ready for the bad news? You can't get it rebuilt, the only thing they offer is a supercore assembly for ~$1300. That being said it's still useful for the lines and ZFR exhaust housing. I have looked into getting one rebuilt and that was my answer from Borg Warner.

Ok, I'll investigate that this week. I was aware of them not selling the EFR turbo cartridges which basically contained new bearings and shaft about a year ago, but I assumed EFR parts would become available eventually as this turbo series has been out for a few years. Borg Warner can’t just assume their turbo’s never fail and the buyers will simply throw away their old one.

I as well have a first gen EFR and come spring am just going to get a new one so I don't have to worry about it. Who knows I may contact BW but I would need the new one before sending in the old which I doubt will work.

Ok, I updated the price accordingly to $300 as I’d like to see someone be able to use this.

Borg Warner will sell you the EFR core for $1200 according to the Borg Warner offices here in MI at 248-754-9200. Kirk at Boost lab’s (The Boost Lab) also said they are willing to look at EFR’s and rebuild if they can. I assume Borg Warner supplies at least some of the parts to them. I was talking to a rep at Borg Warner (I believe her name was Daphne) and she said the reason the cores are so expensive is because they’re dual ceramic ball bearing which are far from your standard journal or ball bearings you see in any other turbo on the market and you’re only buying one at a time. If a company like Boost Lab bought say 1000 cores, then obviously the price would drop significantly.

I hope I gave enough information to someone that was interested in rebuilding the turbo. You should be able to get to get a new build for around $1500 out of your pocket. Or as I said in previous posts, harvest the exhaust housing for another EFR to make it bolt on.
