What about the side of the block slightly under where the water pump bolts on? It would drain into the timing cover and down into the pan. It's perfect for the line routing and flows downhill the entire way. If oil ever backed up that high in the engine something seriously wrong is going on. The only down side I see is that the water pump chain is right there and may be slinging oil toward it.

just a thought, maybe you could have tried welding the hole up and re-tapping it. either way works.

Thanks for the advice, both of you. The fitting is welded on, the new supply line orifice / fitting is in, all lines are hooked up that can be hooked up, I am one fitting short of a complete drain line. It takes about a week for the fittings to arrive and I am going out of town most of next week so there won't be any more progress for the next couple weeks. I forgot pics tonight but they wouldn't have been that exciting anyway.

Week after next it's onto steering pump and driveshafts.

I need a flange for the K04 exhaust outlet. I haven't been able to find one and its an odd-ball pattern. ZZP wants over $50 for it, that's insulting and they are the only one I can find so far. Does anyone know anyone who sells one? Or does anyone have the dimensions on it? I can make my own but if I could find one for ~$20 I'd probably be ahead time-wise by just buying it.

vibrant makes some 4 bolt flanges for the k04, no idea if the cobalt uses its own pattern or not though.

Finally going to get back to work again tomorrow. But of course there's new holdups now.

There's a long story behind this, but I had to sell my TIG welder and get a new one. I'll spare ya'll the details unless you want to hear them. But I went from an early 90's model Miller Syncrowave 350 to a 2016 Everlast 255EXT. TOTALLY different style of welder and I'm going to have to spend some time practicing on the new machine to get used to it. It just came in yesterday so there's that.

I also have to re-wire the lighting in my shop. This is related to the reason I had to sell my welder.

So before I can do anything tomorrow I've got to fiddle with this crap.

I'm still curious about the exhaust outlet flange though. How many different flanges did the K04 have? I THINK that Werks flange is what I need but I notice that it isn't machined to accept a stock gasket. Instead you have to buy their $40 copper gasket. I'm wondering if I might be better off getting a stock o2 housing, cutting the flange off, and welding what I need to it so that I can use a more standard GM gasket. Does anyone know the diameter of the stock o2 housing opening? Would it be a limitation for 3" exhaust?

Are the cats a huge restriction? If not I'm thinking a cat might be a good muffler? I know a Cummins is a completely different animal but my tow rig has no muffler, just the cat, and it sounds awesome.

i couldnt tell you about the flanges, but the stock o2 housing is cast, so keep that in mind if your planning to weld to it. here is the vibrant vw design flange, do some measuring.



i wouldnt run a cat if i were you. under heavy full throttle use in something like this, combined with rich conditions, itll overheat and start to plug up or blow out. better off just to run a muffler.

what happened in your shop? you lose one leg of your 220v? just a guess lol. and let me know how you like the everlast welder.

You're right, mine isn't symmetrical. That's not my flange unfortunately.

My shop / building is almost 100 years old. The electrical going to my panel is not capable of feeding the huge Miller 350 transformer welder. When I got it the unit adjacent to mine had been vacant for over 7 years. The power that ran to it, although it's 1/4 the size of my shop, was capable of powering my welder. It also happened that its lines ran through my shop before going through the wall into their panel. So I cut their lines, installed a breaker box, reconnected their power, activated their meter, and got my welder power that way. Everything was fine for years, my highest power bill was $30. Surprisingly, that unit was rented out though and they wanted their power. I could tell the renter was, let's say, probably not going to be a reliable power bill payer. So I had to choose between letting him assume the meter with the power company and having my welder shut off when he didn't pay his bills or keeping it myself and trying to even up with him on a monthly basis. We agreed to the latter. The first month the bill was only $100. The second month the bill got lost in the mail and then the third month his power went up to $300 along with the previous month at $250. This wasn't good news. I approached him about paying and he said he would pay me but, no surprise, he didn't. So at that point I gave up, wasn't going to keep paying his bill, got ready to sell my welder, and I cut power off. He started it back up but before he even paid his first month's bill he went to jail for threatening to kill his girlfriend and assaulting the officer who responded when she called the police.

He was in jail for about three months. I enjoyed free power that entire time knowing he probably wasn't paying his bill. Eventually he had some of his friends come move him out and the space was vacant again. The power company came and turned his power off. I figured great! I can keep my welder, turn the power back on, and that space will remain vacant for years and years again!

Except 2 days after I turned the power back on he was out of jail and moving back in. Since I had his power on a breaker I just turned his breaker off, he knew he wasn't getting power until he paid me what he owed. He eventually did pay me $100, but that was it. He'll likely never have power again because even if he paid the power company off he would still owe me. (Or vice versa.) But he seems to be on a fairly friendly basis with the land lord for some reason even though he is a shitty rent payer. (I have paid my rent on time monthly for a decade now.) I know I am in the wrong to have control over his power though, I also know that eventually he can complain to the LL who will ask me to turn his power on again.

I don't want it to come to that. So I sold my big welder, got one that I can run off of my panel, and turned his meter off again. He doesn't know I turned it off. If he does eventually pay me I will just tell him, "Thanks, if you want power call the power company!" I know that will never happen though. Right now he has a single 110v extension cord strung through 2 windows from another tenant's unit who is related to the LL. I guess that's fine.

With my new welder now, if the LL ever does call me up and ask me to relinquish power, I can just say, "The only thing that stands between that low life and his power is his unpaid bills with the power company."

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention, somewhere in all that I added some lighting to my shop which I wired to his panel. So now that needs to get moved to my panel.

He still owes me about $350. I'm 90% certain I'll never see it. But there is one very important thing that money did buy me. Since day one that guy has always come over to my shop and talked my head off constantly. He would just show up, start talking, and not stop for hours and hours. (Like he has nothing better to do!) You can probably already tell how valuable shop-time is to me, and he would constantly destroy my productivity. Sometimes I would be flat-out rude to him hoping he would get the clue but it would never work. Well, now that he owes me money he is conveniently never around any more! So I consider my $350 well spent on peace, prosperity, and productivity

Another funny story. He always called me and my shop-mate his "N!66@$." He would walk in the shop and say, "What's up my N!66@$!" He would refer to us as "ya'll N!66@$." We know this is generally a term of endearment to his race so we didn't really mind. We did find it funny though since we are both Caucasian and we had never been called that before. So we joke now about how we are part of the club and can start referring to other people as our "N!66@$" as well. We are still waiting on our membership cards to arrive in the mail though.
