Awesome post guys! As you know I am very happy with my D40, it does what I need it to do and I cant complain. I think we should sticky this because we get a ton of "what camera" posts. Good job fellas!

This is by no means a list of all the available cameras out there, especially the P&S segment which changes every few months, but more as a guide to the most popular and powerful cameras in each price range.
kodak hasn't done anything to stand out from the rest. they have not been keeping up w/ the competition out there. i've had a total of 3 p&s digital kodak cameras in my life and they have been nothing more than mediocre. if you know of a kodak camera that you feel can outperform or perform equally to the ones listed then please let us know and we can look into it and make a review to see how it stacks up.
for those of you interested in the Canon XSi Dell.com is having an online sale right now (not sure how long it will last) on the camera and kit lens (18-55 IS) for $764.99 +tax. shipping is free. that is a great price considering the normal price for just the body itself is $799.99. if you are only interested in the body the price will be $679.99 +tax. shipping is free.
to get the special price you will need to apply this code when checking out. L6WSPT58B$K403

Nice thread, and good info. I have been shooting DSLR's for about 6 years now. For the past 3 years a Canon 1D Mark II has been my workhorse. Fantastic camera, it's so amazingly responsive and easy to use. Only downside to it is it's large of course and not very convenient for more casual occasions.
I have been thinking about a second body for a while now. Something smaller to be used as a back up or for times when I don't feel like carrying the 1D. Picked up a Rebel XSi on Friday and am very impressed with this little machine. For an entry level body it has a very nice view finder....better than my old 10D. This is very important to me...if you have never looked throught the view finder of something like a Canon 1 series...DON'T DO IT...everything else pales in comparison! I wasn't sure I'd be happy not having the rear control dial but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I haven't had a chance to shoot a lot with it yet but so far I'm impressed with the image quality of the shots I have taken...both indoor and outdoor with a mix of flash usage. The kit lens is a disappointment but I expected that. I did some direct comparisons to my 17-40 f4 L and the resolving power of the kit lens is very weak...but again I expected that and don't expect I'll use the kit lens very often if ever.

Thanks for this thread Ryan & DC.
Went out this weekend and bought my girlfriend a A720IS . It was on sale at Sears for $160. Picked it up along with a 2GB SD card for $15. So out the door with card and tax it was $190. Wanted to have this for our NYC vacation next week for the places where I won't be taking my camera.
So far I'm really impressed, seems to be a great camera.

If not there is a free photo-editing program called GIMP I have never used it but I've heard it's a decent alternative

Looks like i'll be getting a Canon XSi (EOS 450D) when i get my new cam! Canon ftw! My S2 IS isn't bad, a good starter, but not enough functionality in it.

BEST lenses would be like 17-55 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 zooms but I doubt you'd want to spend that kind of money.

I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 7.2 MP, I gave almost $400 for it if I remember correctly. I love it, its a pretty good camera, I wish I coulda got the Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XTi tho.
