Evap Vent Solenoid

My car had a check engine light and the dealership said it's an Evap Vent Solenoid. Does anyone know what this is. It is being taken care of under warranty, but I'm curious about it?
And yes I did try a search. I found alot of info about Evap purge solenoid, but not vent solenoid.

Bad gas cap or having it not tight all the way will give the same code, if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry, but they are not the same thing. The purge solenoid(valve) is located on the engine. And the Vent Solenoid(valve) is located under the car on the canister.

Item 726 (which is highlighted) is the purge solenoid. Note the location.

Item 26 in this pic, is the vent soleniod.

does the tank have to be dropped to replace this? Not sure by looking at the diagram but it looks like it would be a pain to replace.

It should be fairly easy. No, the gas tank would not need to be dropped.

here's a copy/paste from SI off of GMDealerworld.com.

DTC P0449
Circuit Description
A battery voltage is supplied to the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister vent solenoid valve. The control module grounds the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve control circuit to close the valve by means of an internal switch called a driver. The scan tool displays the commanded state of the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve as ON or OFF. The control module monitors the status of the driver. If the control module detects an incorrect voltage for the commanded state of the driver, this DTC sets.

The following table illustrates the relationship between the ON and OFF states, and the OPEN or CLOSED states of the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve.

Control Module Command
EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Position

ON - CLOSED

OFF - OPEN

DTC Descriptor
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:

DTC P0449 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent Solenoid Control Circuit

Conditions for Running the DTC
• The ignition is ON.

• The system voltage is between 6-18 volts.

• DTC P0449 runs continuously once the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
• The control module detects that the commanded state of the driver and the actual state of the control circuit do not match.

• The above conditions are present for a minimum of 12 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the second consecutive ignition cycle that the diagnostic runs and fails.

• The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The first time the diagnostic fails, the control module stores this information in the Failure Records. If the diagnostic reports a failure on the second consecutive ignition cycle, the control module records the operating conditions at the time of the failure. The control module writes the operating conditions to the Freeze Frame and updates the Failure Records.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
• The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.

• A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.

• A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.

• Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool.

Another update:

i took my buddy's purge solenoid for testing, cleared the code and turned the car on, in 15 seconds after cold start the same code showed up.

i replaced the fuses as well.

other than a faulty wire, what else could it be?

The vent selinoid opens up the vent canister,if you still have the code there could be still something wrong with the canister ,
Thats what Im thinking.

Sorry should of read the code better.
Check and clean the connector in that circut, any corrosion of the pins or water getting in will change the resistance and the voltage with it.Add some extra di- electric silicone to the inside of the connectors to help keep water out..

Another thing do you hear the trunk monkeys knocking ?
If so the selinoid must be working.

no trunk monkeys but I think the canister may need to be replaced as well. The Onstar rep said that the "lines maybe clogged." I'll replace whatever is necessary to fix the problem for my emissions test. When the vent solenoid shows up I'm going to see if that fixes it.

if your car still has warranty, then yes, it's covered.

Had it and the purge solenoid replaced on my '07 SS/SC under warranty
