Defroster cracked windshield..

Well this is an odd one...about a week ago, my windshield cracked while I was driving home. It was around 35 degrees, and I had the heat on high, but the fan on low. Just heard a loud thud, and then I see a crack right above the defroster vent. I've looked all through the warranty booklet and I don't see anything at all relating to glass. Do you guys think there's any chance they'd replace it under warranty? Can't say I've ever had such a thing happen in all the vehicles I've driven, and in even colder weather. Cheap glass?

If not, I'll just file a claim with my insurance since the windshield likely costs much more than my $100 deductible. And I've already checked with them about this possibly hiking up my rates (it won't). Thanks in advance!

take it to the dealer? might as well. the windshield in my brother's 02 durango r/t spontaneously craked, and the dealer fixed it. they didn't replace the glass since it wasn't a lrge crack, they just fixed it and you could barely tell.

I used to work at a glass shop. Glass can break for no apparent reason. It is considered to be "unstable' and therefore insurance companies cannot raise your rates for breakage such as this.

It is also not covered under warranty. When the glass cracks from the defrosters it almost always has the same crack line. They will know it was from the defrosters.

That probably shouldn't happen unless there was a weak point in the gl*** somewhere. I'd sooner think the windshield had been hit by something(even if there was no visible mark!) and started at that point.

I don't think gl*** just cracks like that just because you have low heat on one side and somewhat cold temperatures on the other. How cold was it outside anyway? How fast were you going?

Yeah that is odd. I would take it in. That should be warranty work.

I have heard of getting chips in the gl***, and then having them expand from throwing heat on them due to the gl*** expanding and contracting. If you had no rock chips, definately argue witht the dealer to replace the windscreen.

Ok, I work for a gl*** shop...No, it won't be covered under your warrantee. Gl*** expands and contracts just like metal does. When it is cold outside, the gl*** contracts, when you blast it with a high level of heat, the contracted air molecules rapidly expand, forcing the crack to run. The same thing applies to if the windshield had a hit in it, the air rapidly expands due to higher heat, and the crack runs. Best advice I can give you is this...Replace the windshield, and in the future, start the heat(and fan) off on a low level, and work it up to high over a period of ten minutes or so...Yes, it sucks, and yes, you'll still be cold for a bit, but your choices are to either deal with a few more minutes of cold, or keep replacing gl***.

Take it to a dealer, if they can determine that it was not a cracked out chip then they will cover it, or atleast a good dealer will. And you can tell if it is a cracked out chip very easy, I do this for a living trust me.......

Listen to Joey. Take it to the dealer, they will likely cover it if there is no indication of impact (chips etc)
Good Luck
