SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today unveiled its newest generation of Roots-type supercharger design that will allow automakers to use smaller, more efficient compressors to create more engine boost. The company unveiled the new design, called Twin Vortices Series (TVS™) at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) tradeshow in Las Vegas.

“We think the TVS™ is a game changer that will allow our customers to make more horsepower without the traditional engineering tradeoffs,” said Jeff Romig, vice president and general manager of Eaton’s supercharger business. “The TVS design has remarkably improved efficiencies and broadens the performance range of the supercharger across an engine’s entire performance range.”

The new patented TVS™ design features four-lobe rotors and high-flow inlet and outlet ports that greatly enhance thermal efficiency, enabling greater volumetric capacity at higher revolutions per minute (RPM). Previous Eaton Roots-type designs featured only three-lobe rotor assemblies. The new TVS™ supercharger design is scalable and adaptable to virtually all engine designs.

The TVS™ supercharger design builds on Eaton’s market leadership position of designing and manufacturing Roots-type superchargers for premiere automotive brands.
The first original equipment application of an Eaton supercharger debuted on the 1989 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe. Since, Eaton superchargers have appeared on the Buick Park Avenue UltraTM, Buick RegalTM, Pontiac Grand PrixTM, Ford Mustang Cobra SVTTM and the Ford Lightening SVTTM. The current generation of Eaton supercharger is available on the MINI Cooper STM, Jaguar XKRTM, Range Rover SportTM, Cadillac STS-VTM, Cadillac XLR-VTM, Chevrolet Cobalt SSTM, Saturn Ion RedlineTM and the Mustang Shelby GT500TM.

Im curious to see what the potential gain will be over the current Supercharger...that will be the basis of upgrading to it in my opinion.

I replied to this in a previous thread that talked about the TVS. I emailed Eaton and asked them how much hp, cost, when it would be available and if they will make an application for our cars.

The only thing they replied with is that it will be available for our application late next year.

 

well alot of the 05 cobalts warranty will be running out around that time so i know we should have some entrepneurs(sp =P) on here that will try it out.

 

We already know how to get more boost out of the M62 that's in the SC now. The issue is how to get more power without blowing things up. You people have to understand that running more boost on pump gas is not the solution to getting more reliable power. I think the M62 is more than efficient enough to provide the necessary boost required. I haven't heard of anyone overspinning the M62 with smaller pulleys yet

 

Its not so much that the TVS provides a platform for higher boost, but it has a wider efficiency range than the M62. I think the M62 peaks around 16,000 RPM. The TVS is rumored to peak around 20-21,000.

 

For the price they'll want and the supporting mods and internal engine work you would need to do you may as well buy a $25,000 car...

So you mean the TVS may make boost at lower RPM and over a broader range on the powerband so as not to "peak" or "surge" at a paticular RPM. I would love for GM to come out with a torque limiter like Mazda did with the Madaspeed 3 to help with better launching of this car.

 

boost delivery should be sooner and high end airflow capabilities should increase over the m62's. Thats one of the main reasons why a turbo'd car at similar boost levels should eventually pull slightly away from an eaton supercharged car once they both achieve high RPM at high speeds.

It would be sweet if we can just swap the TVS onto the stock aftercooler, what do you guys think?
