I went cheap and ended up having to replace the timing chain twice because of it. The chain was **** and the guide that bolts to the head wasn't formed correctly and rubbed on the chain. I'm lucky I figured out what was happening before it failed and potentially did more damage. Never go cheap on engine internals.

Cloyes literally makes the oem guides for gm. They say cloyes right on them.

ive never run into a cloyes timing chain kit that i had an issue with, always good stuff.

I don't mean to hijack Isaac's thread, but at what point should the timing chain be replaced (miles?) and how hard is it to replace? I have about 150,000 miles on mine, but don't hear any noises from the chain. But would it need to be changed anyhow to be safe?

I may be wrong but there should be a amount of slack int he chain that's within spec. More slack than it's time to replace.

GM doesn't give a recommended schedule.

slack in the chain is caused by stretch, stretch eventaully leads to breakage. ive seen cars in the junkyard with broken chains, i always look at the mileage and they are always over 300k km. gm doesnt have a service schedule for it (in their eyes you should scrap the car and buy a new one from them anything outside of warranty), but with the mileage you have id consider changing it. complete timing sets (do both the cam timing chain and balance shaft chain) with gears, guides, tensioners, and a new water pump. itll cost a bit to do, but if the motor is in otherwise good shape and you like the car, its worth doing.

and thanks. the pic in my signature is kinda old, 2007 when i bought the car. being my daily driven year round and having 222k km on it, its not nearly as clean. in the past year the clear has started peeling so if i keep it ill have to have it repainted.
