RPM Tach Dead, SES Light

So driving home I'm not paying attention on a hill in traffic and I stall my car out by not giving it enough gas.

I restart my car, which takes a few seconds longer then usual, and the RPM gauge is no longer working. The speedo and the gas gauge work, but no RPM gauge. Now my car has no top end, like the computer is limiting power to it, and my SES light popped on.

Anyone know what is happening here? I guess it is time to take my 8300KM car in for service!

I am not sure but I have noticed if I stall my car it is difficult to restart it.

Yeah, if you have OnStar, did you have them run a diagnostic?

It sounds like it is in Limp Mode. Shut if off, let it sit for a while and try it again, see what it does. It should go back to normal on its own.

Let the car sit for approx 10-15 mins... Then restart it. My car did the same thing. I checked it for codes... no codes in any of the modules. I think its some kind of programming glitch in the PCM. I know some other members have had the same thing. Only thing I can think is to take it in and see if they can update the PCM software. Good luck !

Now that you mention it, perhaps it has something to do with the "anti-abuse" programming in the ECU. Some of the newer cars (Mustang, Cobalt) have a built in feature that puts the car into "limp mode" when it senses that the car is being "abused".

Now obviously stalling out by accident doesn't constitute abuse, but who knows how the PCM may interpret it. If that was the case, then letting the car sit for 10-15 mins (to de-activate limp mode) should clear up the problem completely.

See what you can come up with and let us know.

YEah, the RPM's came back on my next rip, and by then end of the night my Service Engine Soon light had gone away too.

All seems to be well with the car.

happened to me when I hit my rev limiter once, so I disconnect the battery and it works.
