SAAB Turbo for Cobalt 2.0 - 2.4L engines?

SAAB ecotec turbo. pushing 12.3psi to make 210 crank HP. any one have specs that tell us if the set up would fit on the ecotecs found in the cobalt, bolt pattern etc?

this way we can know if adding the SAAB turbo items can be done easiy to the 2.4L engine and under.

they will likely bolt up to the 2.0, as i'm pretty sure it's the same only with turbo, the 2.2 and 2.4 may not bolt up though

all ecotec's use the same bolt pattern and bellhousing(with exception, possibly, of RWD models), so yes, it will fit.

whether the wireing matches is another story.

yes the turbo manifold flange will bolt up. but not known how well the entire setup will fit. its all about clearance issues. if you look at the ss s/c it looks crammed in there its going to be a pain to work on, ei putting headers on or cam shafts theres not much room in there to move around at all. so running IC piping will be a pain in the ass. but none the less i still think gm should have done a turbo setup like saab's 210hp and 220tq.

you could just swap out the piping/manifolds/ecu etc. from the saab to the SS or RL... same tranny

Thatd be possible, but you might be better off getting a kit, its cheaper

not worried about cramped spaces...I work on our SRT-4 and I know cramped spaces...
If i do decide to go with one of these, i expect to challenge the G/F to a race...

car has ran 120-121mph traps though....

what i ment was the manifold and turbo from the saab swaped on to a cobalt the engine bay would produce possible interferance, thus making a custom manifold and turbo setup would be more easier and less headaches. like maning a tubular style manifold, u know a turbo mani that uses same shape and style as the stock manifold and slapping the turbo on it. that would give it more clearance. cuz the turbo and mani from the saab might hit the firewall on the of the cobalt, or something might be in the way.

Exclamation RK Sport turbo kit for 2.2L

Fresh news! Just today our tuner and I were talking about the Colorado (truck) and the S/C kit we are currently working on and we switched the conversation over to the Cobalt.

Since we have already built a 2.2L turbo in a Cavalier that put out 240 to the wheels, We are looking at producing the same kit for the Cobalt and selling it to the masses.

I don't have a price, when or what turbo yet. Speculate all you want, we will need time to prove this kit reliable BEFORE we even sell one unit.

Stay tuned,

RC

I think turbo kits for the 2.2 and 2.4 would be more beneficial than that of the SS, the SS was built for S/Cing, and take that away you take the essence of the car. I think I'd pick up a turbo kit however for a 2.2, thatd be quite useable

I'm pretty sure that the 2.0L ecotec in the SS is based on the SAAB 2.0L Turbo engine, as referred to earlier in the thread. For the Cobalt and Redline GM decided to SC it, which is different then most tuners, but I think cool because of that difference.

The Project!

The project that we are working on at my dealership is a combination of both turbo and supercharger. To answer the early questions yes the 2.0L is out of the saab. The 2.2 and 2.4 are completley diffrent motors. So our thinking is to do both! The turbo would be on the back side of the motor forcing air into the supercharger that is located on the front side of the motor. I am in the process of rounding up parts of a 2.0t from a saab and will keep you updated as far as a outcome. Could just do pullies, but I want more. I have a t/3 t/4 integra in the garage and miss that turbo grunt.

Does the Ion Redline have the Getrag transmission? The Saab and the SS/SC share the same tranny tho

Relocate the battery, neon peeps, that will get you room to remove the double 90 bend to the TB, good for smoothing out the airflow in the IC piping
every tuner car i owned i have always but the battery in the trunk

Until now, the SS is stock rear battery

In case you missed it the TB is on the front of the motor there. The battery location has absolutely nothing to do with where the cold air going into the motor is routed. It comes from the intercooler to the TB.

Out air takes a long trip from the turbo to the TB.

Yes, I believe all cobalts have the battery in the trunk.... The black box in our engine compartment with the red (+) post in it is the fuse box....

On topic: I think it would be cheap to get the whole system from the saab and bolt it up if it fits.....

so just out of curiosity if your gonna make a custom turbo kit you could use the turbo header? Now if this sounds stupid its cuz I don't know much about turbos

Yes and No.

You can only use the saab exhaust manifold if the flanges match up.

My opinion is that the turbo is too small and it'll run out of it's efficiency. It's pushing 12 PSI because it can only make power with a high amount of boost.

FYI: They use a Mitsubishi TD04 Turbo.

It's a small fast spooling turbo that'll give you tons of torque in the lower RPMs of 2500-3000 range but it'll lack in the high end. Granted, I have not put this on an ecotec motor but this is going by the physicallity of the turbo and going by the tendencies of certain sized turbochargers.

I have a friend who has it on his 2.2 ECOTEC Cavalier and put out 270 WTQ at 3000 RPMs but 200 WHP (can't remember the RPM) at I believe 10 PSI.

Yes same motor. The 2.0 T has been out since 2003 in the Saab 9-3s.

The 2.0 motor in the SS wasn't made for Supercharging...it was made for ANY type of forced induction. Like in my previous post, it was first used in the Saabs in 2003 with a turbocharger.

Look at the motor for what it is... a low compressioned, small displacement motor that was designed for forced induction and to be reliable while still using boost.
