I have read the sticky. Need JM4 to JL9

So I just bought a sweet little 2008 Sport 2.4 with a rebuilt title to use for weekend tinkering and commutes to work. My wife wouldn't let me fork out the extra in the SS Turbo, but anyway. I got the car for $3200 cash, 99k miles, light collision to the driver side rear fender. During the test drive I noticed the alignment was off so I asked if there was any structural damage, he said, none at all and showed me the before pics. Well, the axle is bent and I don't want to spend $700 on a junkyard part to be shipped to my house. I found a few JM4s but everybody tells me I can't convert it to disk brakes. The sticky says it's all interchangeable and the only difference I see is the soft ride suspension that I assume is a thinner stabilizer. Can you please tell me why I can't buy the $150 JM4, buy an aftermarket stabilizer, bolt my parts on and have a great car? Anyone?

As long as the beam has the caliper bracket holes it will work. The swaybar part doesnt matter, especially if you get a powell add on unit.

There are kits to convert a JM4 to run disks, but the rear twisting beam (which is what I assume you're referring to as the axle) is different from a JL9 from the mounting stand point.

You have to get brackets to mount the caliper too, John Powell of Powell Race Shop makes some, given you have all the disk brake parts it might be slightly cheaper, I forget what the cost is for the brackets. He doesnt have an online store you'll have to email him or Gloria, I don't have their emails handy someone on here should be able to provide them.

The JM4 doesn't have the caliper bracket, it's just drums.

I wasnt sure which was which, but my comment still stands. Also, i agree you could use powell caliper brackets.

True, some yards would just label it the more common one

OP if you find a yard where you can pull your own parts, theres bound to be an ion/cobalt/hhr/g5 with rear disc.

I didn't even think about the caliper mounts. I have checked with almost every junkyard in Indianapolis, the ones that have emailed me back only have drum axle beams. I refer to it as an axle beam because that is what it's lists as from GM. I had the service guy tell me my car is God and doesn't have a rear axle. I didn't feel like explaining it. Anyway, I can't seem to find a G5 GT or SS in the area. The 9 listed at pull-a-part are 2.2l and I'm waiting to hear from pick-a-part. I'll look into the conversion kits. Thanks for the responses.

Some 2.2 had discs, depends on trim level.

I found one on ebay for a G5 GT listed for $460 with free shipping. I offered $300, it'll be here Tuesday. Hopefully, problem solved.
