Finally got around to wrapping my rear YYZ's this last Holiday weekend.
I had a feeling that at least some of my clunks were coming from the springs, and after cleaning them off a bit, it soon because clear by the marks on them that they were indeed hitting on the dead coils:

Now I know that Powell offers sleeving to deal with this issue, but I like to tinker and come up with my own solutions every now and then

My plan was to use a thin wall clear hose or black vinyl sleeving, but it turned out to be near impossible to get either one over the tiny first coil at each end of the spring. I then thought of trying some of that nylon expandable braided sleeving that is used on hoses and wiring under the hood a lot. I had access to various sizes and it turned out that 1/2" was the sweet spot. I secured the sleeving with zip ties on both ends:

I just made a test drive on my lunch break and it makes a HUGE difference! When I was hoping to get rid of some of the clunking at best, it in fact pretty much resolved all of it. I don't think my car has ever been this quiet driving on our bad Colorado roads

Time will tell how long these sleeves will last, or how good they will look once they get some road grime on them, but for now I'm extremely happy with this "mod".

Nice job. I kinda prefer the spray undercoating material I am using. I could never hear the noise anyway, \my Redline squeaks too much lol.

Funny you say that. Mine squeaked a bit before, especially when slowly going off an incline driveway or over a speed bump diagonally. Now that the clunking's gone, the squeaking is much more noticeable. Ah the joys of econoboxes

I'm sure we can track down the squeaking

Strange, my V5's have never made a clunking noise and it doesn't look like the coils have been coming into contact with each other.

It IS very strange how some Cobalts have this issue and other don't...

I recently noticed that even my front springs show signs of wear from the coils hitting each other. I will have to come up with a wrap for them as well.
