Why does altitude affect transmission shifting? (Mine skips 2nd at WOT)

I went from El Paso (3800-4000ft) to Abilene, TX (1600-1700ft) to visit my bestest little buddy and brother this weekend and go camping for the weekend. In the higher altitudes the car runs great and shifts as I expect it to. But when I get into Abilene the car changes completely. It runs just as strong but if I floor it from a stop it will reach redline and shift, chirping the tires, then shift directly from 1st to 3rd and gets bogged down. It is really annoying. Is there a reason for this? I changed nothing in the tune between the two places. I'd kind of like it not to happen again.

Even though this is an auto with no traction control, is there traction control built in? I'm just confused.
