OEM Wheels for Snow Tires

Guys,

I'm trying to find 16" OEM wheels for my 06 SS/SC.
Got stuck with my pants down in Portland OR where it rarely snows and we know how bad summer perf tires work in the snow.
I can literally get stuck on flat ground, I've seen me do it.

Anyway, I find 16" alum oem wheels that at least look somewhat like our 18's on Ebay, but every add says 2007 up.

Is this correct?

Brakes didn't change, at leas the 06 is certainly not bigger than 07.
42mm offset is correct, 5x110mm is also correct.

Center hub diff perhaps?

Odd because the steel ones I see fit 05-2010.

I'd like to get setup.....which will guarantee no snow in Portland for the next 3 years.......

Thanks,

BTW, I searched for this info but couldn't find it.....

nothing changed, all gm 5x110 will fit. the only exclusion to that is ss turbo cars with brembos, spoke clearance is the issue there.

Thank you Sir!
I'd bet they all use the same data base that is incorrect.

Been a member here since I bought the car. I guess I haven't posted much.

Thanks again.

Looks like a steal here. $150 for a full set of SS/SC wheels that need paint.
Cobalt ss/sc wheels

Otherwise there's a few others.
$550 for a full set of 17" with studless snows
4x Continental Studless snow tires (17 in.) on wheels.

Anything in 5x110 will fit the Cobalts with the exception of the Brembo equipped cars. As Sharkey said.

I'm going to cheat and just buy 2 for the front. Then buy two new studded snow tires.
Will be something I only use for snow. Then take em right back off.
Years ago I had a 90 Quad 442 Cutlass Calais FWD that I added a Torsen LSD to (same as the Cobalt LSD) and the thing went very well as long as the snow wasn't too deep.

As I said, doing this will guarantee no snow here for the next few years.
But it's really sucked watching all the awd sport utes cruising around while the slowbalt sat in the driveway!

Went last winter with Winters on the front and Summers on the rear. I could slide it everywhere without the e brake.

It's not terrible. Especially if you have winter driving experience. I had no issues last Winter.

Save yourself some money, just get snow chains. Throw them in the trunk and then you'll have them wheen needed.

This is not a good idea..

Because you can control the front but not the rear.

They say if you are only going to have 2 winter tires then they should go on the rear because you can control the front so you want the traction on the back. I do ice racing with my LNF and the instructors tell us to use the best tires on the rear.

I mean honestly, there are so many cheap winter tires out there. I have a set of SS SC wheels that I bought for 150$ and then I got a set of 215/40/18 winter tires (saliun ice blazer AKA chinese tire) for 400$. And this is in Canada so you could get these tires for even cheaper in the states. Or go buy a used set of tires because you are only using them when it snows.

It's not bad at all. I did it last year after two of my sidewalls broke while mounting.

Is it ideal? Nope but with some common sense and being aware that the rear doesn't have as much grip it's completely fine.

Well, I did rotate my tires Sat to at least get some tread on the front.
Drove to work yesterday. Side streets and main streets are a mess, but freeways clear.
Coming home last night I hit a huge new pothole on the freeway and busted the sidewall on the left front tire.
They are, or were, Hankook Ventus V12 225/45/18.

So at this point I'll have to buy a set and I'll go for all season tires this time.

I liked the Hankooks. But I've never had more punctures in my life with them. Discontinued now anyway.

As far as chains, with less than a half inch clearance from the tire to the bottom of the strut, I noted that when I was doing the rotation, it's a no go.

Freezing rain as I type here, so I'll just sit inside and watch the show.......

Thanks guys!

Ron

Tire chains don't fit the SS models anyway as you pointed out. Not enough clearance.

Nope, not unless you put on 25" dia tires, which would look silly.

I bought a set of 225/45 Continental DWS-06 today.
Be on tomorrow.
I won't expect snow here until 2020, and it will be an inch.......

That's how it works. We got a bunch of snow my first year back in Washington like 6 years ago when I was on all seasons. Bought a set of snow tires a year later and nada until this year when we got a dusting.

How to make tire chains fit on a Cobalt:

That's a great photo. Wrong end of the car though.
:-)
Which I've seen people do btw.
It's been an unusual Portland winter.
Renton is on the list!

Works on the other end too. Though I would imagine it'd need to be even farther so that the tires clear the body work at full lock.

Portland got slammed this year. We've just got a little ice up here in the mornings right now.

Washed my car for the first time since I had these tires put on.
I never even looked at them after the install.

They put on 225/40/18's.

Unbelievable.......

That said, these are the nicest tires I've ever had on the car.
