bad day at the track, broken axle.

Well I headed down to Pittsburgh raceway on Saturday not expecting to run, I've got blown map sensors and its been acting a bit goofy. Well I get there and decide ehh screw it my other 2 buddy's with their cobalts are running to, I'm pushing well over a reg cobalt and a stock SS with a few parts and stock tune are. I've never ran at the track since i was stock(14.3 & over a year ago) ill at least beat my stock time. Boy was i wrong. I pull into the wet pit, give it hell in first bouncing off redline to warm my nitro 555's up a little. Pull up to launch at about 2-3 grand, dump the six puck and it lunges forward and u hear a loud POP. Well after slightly embarassing getting pushed into the "i broke **** lane", and tow home i found out i broke and axle. Driver side, didn't rip into it but inside CV boot was all chewed up. I'm hoping it didn't break halfway inside the tranny but ill figure it out once i start tearing it down. So I'm figuring ill need the driveshaft shops stage 5 axles, they only have stage 2 and stage 5... anyone else know of any other axle places for 400hp area. I'm planning to go a little overkill to not have a repeat problem.

Was a decent day for my buddy's cobalt thoe. He pulled 13.7 with a ghetto intake i made, catless downpipe and a few hacked off exhaust parts after downpipe and stock tune. He was only a few tenths away from the tuned up cobalts that ran

Was nice meeting you by the way. Sucks about the axle. My old Cobalt I use to break them twice a month at the track. You will get good at swapping them fast.

Surprised I have yet to break an axle on the current Cobalt. I run full bias-ply slicks and running mid 12s on stock stuff. Best time on saturday was only a 12.6, though.

BTW, what was your buddies 350Z running? I only saw his first run, looked like it was hopping bad in the rear.

It was **** for the power he is pushing. We got home and noticed his snap ring poped out of the Turbo haha, it wasn't holding boost cuz the it literally was in 2 pieces. He got like a 13.3 or something. He should be somewhere is the 12's. I cane with a silver evo to. He hit 11.5! That things crazy on a stock turbo

He also has to short shift into second or it wont go into gear. The thing is a pain in the dick, he is changing whole setup and going the Toyota way over the winter so it should be solid.

I had the filthy blue one with the CF hood and steel wheels w/ slicks. Surprised I haven't seen ya driving around since you live in the Coraopolis/Robinson area.

When I worked in Robinson, I saw your buddies 350Z almost daily, lol.

I just bought a WOT box and probably going back to PRP the next couple weeks before they close. I want low 12s before winter.

Well I work in north central pa, 2 weeks on and 1 week off, so I'm in Robinson for the one week off so I'm not there all that much. I live with him and his girlfriend in ventana hills its like 3 min from the mall. That area doesn't see to have much of a nightlife.

I am probably only around 340ish if I had to guess. Never dyno'd though. Been trapping around 116 in the 1/4 to reference.

Those r damn good times for the power. How wide of slick r u running, I'm gunna be looking into them now, I'm not sure how wide I can go, or if ima need spacers

I run a Hoosier Quick Time Pro 26"x9.5"x16". Run them on a cheap 16" steel wheel. I don't run any spacers, but I am going too. When they balloon out they rub on the strut. Also, I obviously can't turn the wheel much or they rub.

.5" spacer with extended studs should take care of all that, though. But since you have Brembo's they won't fit.

My 60 foots have only been 2.0's. Once I get the 2-step and football drag *****, I am hoping for 1.7's and hopefully low 12s in the 1/4.

pull up to the staging beams. pull up on the ebrake. slowly let out the clutch while ebrake is still up. It puts "tension" on the axles. this way it doesnt shock them when you dump the clutch.

we race with a guy who doesnt preload broke 2 axles in 2 weeks. just a bolt on K-swap integra. we have another with 500whp on 24'' slicks that does load them. never broke one. it works.

Getting rid of the 18" wheels and getting tires just for drag was the best thing I did.

It really does make a huge difference.

Yea, brembos really kick my wheel selection in the *****. Ill figure something out, I'm really not track crazy and don't daily drive mine so ill try to find some balance of soft/wide/drivable on my rims.

I might think about doing it too. HP I'm pushing I prolly should just have a set to put on for the track. The damn car oddly really doesn't burn tire thoe its odd.

Most dont break axles. I bet your lunge was one big hop and a broke axle followed. I as well as others have launched at 5500 rpms on slicks and no breakage. But definitly put in stronger ones so you have nothing to worry about. And sometimes you can just send your axles to be rebuilt stronger and it will be cheaper.
