Floor mats - need them
Floor mats - need them
I need new front floormats for my SS/TC but Weathertech said their Digital Fit won't fit the manual Cobalts. Does anyone know of any high quality custom-fit mats worthwhile for the SS/TC?
I keep wearing holes in the rubber mats. The only mats that I've used that can handle my feet are the Duplicolor Ford licensed mats I got for the Crown Vic - but they are hardly custom fit.

Will the Weathertechs digital fits definitely work with the manual?
How is the durability versus the Husky?
I'll have to get the Weathertech for my 2007 Mustang since Husky doesn't make them.

And another confirmation, the Weathertech fits manual transmission cars. I have them in my 09 SS sedan, just don't have any direct pics of them installed. You can just see the fronts of the mats in this pic.
How thick are the Weathertech digital liner mats?
How about the Husky liners?
I contacted Weathertech and showed them this thread, but I didn't like their attitude about how they designed the mats for the most popular trim (automatic), yet if the manual is 0.1% different requiring less material in one part, why didn't they just design the mats for the manual Cobalts?
I noticed that Husky offers a lifetime warranty on their liners, while Weathertech is only 3 years. Both brands are made in the USA.

Yes, their engineering department said it was designed for automatics only. They were pretty snippy about it when I said why not design the mold for the manuals, that way it would work with the automatics as well.
I ended up ordering the Husky Liner set for my SS Turbo. I'm not sure how good these are, but they were advertised as good to go for manuals or automatics.
I had to order the Weathertech liners for my Mustang GT because Husky doesn't make the liners for 05-09 Mustangs for some odd reason.
I still feel that Weathertech is overhyped/overpriced, but I'll end up testing out the Weathertechs on the GT and the Husky set for the SS Turbo.

Personally my only option would be stock replacements

Kinda high for stock replacement but good fitment.

Also have the floor liners in my t/c. Only one time has it somehow got bent up and stuck behind the clutch, but it wasn't anything major. Just pushed it back down and it hasn't happened since.
I received my Weathertech liners today for my Mustang GT. The material feels like a hard plastic, but it is soft/pliable like the Santoprene rail covers they use for Picatinny Rails (AR15/M4 handguard rail covers) - it is hard/stiff but pliable. The thickness is about 1/8", and the back is completely smooth. I was skeptical about it staying in place, but it gets wedged in the floorpan very tightly.
I don't mind the Weathertech Logo, and the texture that faces the occupants isn't completely smooth, but it has a texture to it. I'm concerned that the heel area for the clutch has ribs, while the heel area for the throttle is smooth. My original OEM Ford all-weather mats developed 2 holes: one for each of my heels. I don't wear hard shoes, and I guess 5 summer/spring seasons wore them out.
I'm still waiting on the Husky liners for the Cobalt SS Turbo before I can make a direct comparison. The impression I get from the Weathertech is that they're pretty damn good, the price could be lower ($60 per mat), but I can see how they can be heat resistant (Santoprene can handle 350F-400F of heat, and not crumble away from abrasion). Car and Driver did a test by throwing a lit cigarette on one of these and didn't cause any damage.
The things I'll be looking for n the Husky is whether they move around, if the material is durable, and if there's any interference with the clutch pedal.

I received the Husky Liners today for the SS Turbo. Wow, they suck the big one. The driver's floor liner isn't even a good fit. It interferes with the throttle and clutch, not to mention it sort of pops up and even has those SPiN nubs inside the indent for the retainer hook, as well as the plastic dead pedal. There's no reason to have SPiN nubs on a plastic surface! I am going to go with the Weathertech liners and take my chances with the clutch interference (if any).
The material is a smooth and floppy plastic, definitely not even close to the Weathertech material. The texture is totally smooth.

I got the Weathertechs. I fit the liners without any issues, and noted no clearance issues with my clutch pedal. It misses the liner by about an inch or more. The throttle pedal, however, does touch the liner. But if you push down harder with your foot, it will compress the Weathertech liner and the factory carpeting to allow full throttle capability. The liner only partially covers the dead pedal, which is not an issue. The liners came out of the box rather warped, so they don’t fully hug the sides of the interior as well as I’d like, but it looks like the rubber material may settle down in the future with some heat and gravity.
Now push the floormat as far forward as possible and push down the clutch pedal at the same time. See if your throttle pedal can be completely open, or if it touches the mat.
With the mat as far forward as possible, I observed clearance issues with the clutch pedal. The pedal would catch on the edge of the mat. This is mainly due to the amount of play available in the hole for the carpet retainer.
Also, the gas pedal couldn't be pushed down all the way due to the thickness of the Weathertech mat. The solution was to cut a notch for the clutch pedal and a small hole for the corner of the gas pedal.

It's actually a very similar reason to why the Dodge Charger only comes in auto yet the Challenger comes in manual. The Charger would need full crash testing done if they cut a hole in the floor pan to accommodate the 3rd pedal. One of those things that only makes sense when you consider safety and millions of product being made and shipped. Liability goes through the roof as you increase product volume.
They're snippy about it because they need to do comprehensive safety testing on all floor mats when there's a change in design, any change. This is because of those cases where floor mats have become lodged underneath the gas pedal or brake pedal and caused a death. It's not because they don't want to.

What I ended up doing was cut a notch for the clutch, and cut a hole in that one corner for the throttle pedal so I can go WOT.
The overall fit for the floorpan was still not that great.
Now the Weathertechs for my Mustang GT on the other hand, was a perfect fit.
They're snippy, and their products are overpriced but I may consider them on my Taurus SHO once the factory carpeted floormats wear through. I found that the Weathertechs aren't totally necessary. Salt and dirt/sand comes out very easily on modern carpets.

I've had my weathertechs for 4 years and I had to cut a notch in it to keep one of the pedals from catching (I forget which one). But other than that, they are great. One time a 64oz Coke jumped out of my cup holder onto the floor by the passenger seat. I cleaned it up in like 30 seconds with no trace
