The LONG SHORT shifter debate

ordering a short throw shifter, anyone had any success with any new ones? i hear alot of good stuff about the TWM but i hate that shiny ball. i like old school like the old Hurst ones. any suggestions? spare me the 'this is an old thread' nonsense.

It's a toss up between the B&M and TWM. I've had both. Right now I'm still running the TWM because I have a friend making a knob out of delrin. The B&M shifts a tiny bit better, and is oriented a little bit better. You can still find B&M on ebay. TWM is easy to find.

Most of the people on here talk about TWM, but that's generally either the only one that they've had, or their other one was not adjusted properly. It takes a few attempts to get the cable alignment just right, and the knob will not be in the same location for stock, TWM, and B&M. You cannot go by knob location.

If you're on a budget, go B&M. It has a mostly delrin/plastic knob which is much more comfortable. If you're willing to spend more and deal with a ridiculous metal knob, get the TWM, though I suggest one of their other knobs. The round metal one is not a good fit for this car, and it's too short.

Me personally, I've experienced both, and the TWM felt better, more solid than the B&M. Also for me I love the metal knob call me weird if you must. Also for my arm length, the short stick works perfect.

Neither, I took my shifter apart and replaced the rubber washer mounted base with a big aluminum plate I had laying around and the linkage ball ends have been replaced with bolts and spring washers, everything is mounted down solid, the feel is just as well as anything else...better than stock.

I'd also like to petition TWM to get a hurry on and finish the link ends for the shift cables so I can buy a pair!

After reading on all the threads despite of what people say im still going to buy a hurst

I have a B&M short shifter for my sunfire and I love it.

Only problem is the metal shift knob gets EXTREMLY hot in the summer and extremly cold in the winter. I was looking for B&M's derlin knob but couldn't ever find one :P

for me its b&m with base bushings. ive driven the lnf cars with the hurst b&m and twm. twm is just overpriced and not worth the mone to me.

sporttintturbo 09-05-2010 12:28 PM

Just did a hurst. Easy install. shifts awesome. My buddies girlfriend looked at it and said "that could really gauge a butthole" so I guess that's a plus too.

fakameanrepresent 09-05-2010 10:01 PM

i have an ARK short shifter with the aluminum bushing and its been pretty good to me.

Blown07SS 09-05-2010 10:18 PM

Haha gauge a butthole lol I like hurst and will be looking for one soon

BooSSted 09-05-2010 10:32 PM

I'm using a B&M with approx 1.5" removed from it with a Sparco Globe X Shift Knob. It's probably the nicest setup I have ever driven with. I've had it for about 4 years now and 2 different cars!

Yeah, I wrote an objective review on the B&M v TWM, and the TWM fan boys got all mad, even though I had specific reasons for liking and disliking both.

No shiny ball here

I love my hurst. It is essentially the same throw as stock, except 5th is shortened. It also shifts more firmly thanks to the metal ball. It adds a little more confidence to each shift. As far as aesthetics go, I feel it is the best looking shifter on the market.

THAT SAID, you shouldn't only get a shifter based on looks. If I were in your shoes the decision would be easy. Just go TWM.

pnshmntMMA 09-06-2010 01:56 PM

what are the chances of fitting a Hurst ball on the TWM shifter?

Pyros777 09-06-2010 02:34 PM

Hurst = 3/8 x 24
TWM = M12 x 1.25

Sorry no-go.

Whining-devil 09-06-2010 03:11 PM

i have the hurst, its the best lookin shifter for sure, but i dont really like the feel of it, if i could go back id rather go twm or b&m and not hurst.

raynrishad 09-06-2010 03:16 PM

I love my hurst. The way it feels in my hand is a lot better vs stock and vs twm. I've driven my balt with my hurst, then driven my buddies 09 with a twm and then driven my other buddies with the stock. I feel that the hurst just fits just right in my hand for my hieght. 6'3" and a long torso. However like anything that comes with a metal ball for a knob it gets hot as hell in the summer and freezing in the winter. I just suck it up and hardly touch it when it's untouchable. My buddy with the twm just takes his knob off and takes it inside to work with him lol.

Also with the Hurst, I can't bloody get the reverse lockout to work and I have sat there for over an hour tinkering trying everything. My buddy with the twm also sat there for a while tinkering. Also, I tend to lose 5th gear. The hurst moves it closer to 3rd gear but you still have all that empty space where 5th used to be. Besides those drawbacks I still love it. I'm old school too and just love the hurst.

I also feel that compared to the stock it shifts smoother and quicker.

Does the ARK fit the stock knob like their website says.

doubt it

quikdcride 09-07-2010 02:17 AM

Once you get the TWM calibrated just right its the best shifter
its more expensive for a reason
obviously people are buying it over the B&M and Hurst
ive driven the hurst and stock and i have the twm. i was originally gonna hate on it
but i emailed them first and they were more then helpful with tips how to get it perfect for my shifting style
