Is my turbo supposed to get louder?

I got my car about 3 weeks ago its an 08 ss/tc and when I first got it I could barely hear the turbo now it has 1800 miles on it and the turbo has gotton probably 3-4 times louder is this normal? I love the sound of it and I am starting to be able to hear ot dumping the extra boost into the intake. I was wondering if the turbo is like an exhaust the and when it breaks in if it gets louder or is something wrong with it? When I first got it noone could hear the turbo just a very slight whine, now people come up to me and ask me where i got my turbo done at its that obvious.

i thought there was a break in period where boost was limited.. you may have just passed that point where the computer is allowing more boost...

I haven't read any of the responses to your question here....so maybe someone answered it by now.. but here goes.

I don't know **** about Turbos.... but I do know that the break in period for the car is 1500 miles... sounds like you just passed that.

And from what you allready know about Exhaust ( turbo deals with it in a way) sounds like turbos get louder after they break in.. like exhaust pipes and ****.

hey... sounds like its a good thing!

Exhaust breaks in and gets louder? Since when?

My turbo has sounded the same since day 1, maybe you are leaking boost?

think he would mention the loss of power in his thread?

Sounds to me like a good sound.. not a bad sound... Car is like your baby....you know when something is wrong, even if your not that knowledgeable about the part/car.

But then again, if other 08s are not noticing it, then.. *shrug* might wanna zip up to your dealer really quick... take a service tech out for a quick ride through some of the gears.

Exhaust systems always get louder as you put miles on your car unless you have a chambered exhaust because the packing inside the muffler breaks down over time...

Huh... I am gonna reach that milestone pretty soon. I put alot of miles on my car. Only had it 3 weeks and i got 1,200 on it already. Maybe you are just getting used to the car and getting on it a little more. I didn't notice how loud the turbo/exhaust really was till I rolled down by windows and wasn't blaring any music. I had my friend follow me to work and I asked him if he could hear my car while he was driving. He said "oh yeah" and here I am with the windows up and some tune-skies on and I don't really notice it at all.

when exhausts break in their tone can change a bit from the day installed to a couple hundred miles later just due to expanding and contracting.

edit to add:
the note also wont even change that much, i barely noticed it w/ my exhaust on my redline.

Hey, there ya go.

Make sure all factors are accounted for before you troubleshoot ANYTHING

if there is no loss of power.. then .. I wouldn't worry about it to much... take it to a dealer like I said, let them listen to it...

No loss in power and I have been driving the car the same since I got it I usually drive in my neighbor hood with the radio off and the windows down because i like the sound when I go between houses I will have to see if it is allowing mor boost when I first got it it was about 14.5psi so I will check that at lunch. I actually feel like it has a little more power but every once in a while it seems like it takes a long time for it to spool up and then bang im in the seat and grining from ear to ear. That seems to happen in higher gears when i am at lower rpm so I'm sure thats normal. The only thing actually wrong with the car is it looks retarded right now with a dougnut on it since I hit a ran over a brick and bent my rim and tore my tire. Good news is I just got my dealer packet and I get $50 of my tire up to 4 times.

I'm at about 1,800 miles and noticed an increase in the sound of the turbo spooling up and the by pass valve...

However, I put in a K&N at the same time I hit the 1,500 mile mark, so I cannot attribute the noise increase to the break in period...maybe it is both...but it for sure is because of the new air filter...

It feels like it pulls a little better at low RPMs and it definitely makes the turbo louder...

It is just a drop in filter that replaces the paper one...

I agree with Krispy...my 08 Turbo has 2200 miles and it sounds the same today as it did on day one. Exhaust break in...hmmmmm. I agree with the exhaust getting a bit louder due to the packing break down, but a break in.

No way? lmao that would be extremely funny if they refused to work on it. Granted the sales ppl don't know but the mechanics gotta know...

Well at lunch I drove it home to eat and it does go to 16psi sometimes now, but other than that everything is the same. I asked my dad and he said he thought it was louder also so maybe something is wrong. However I am not loosing any performance that I can tell I guess I will drive it until it breaks if its going to.

16 PSI seems like it's on the high side for a stock tune. I would think that GM limits the boost like they did with the SS/SC. I know that when the cat gets clogged up on the SC's the boost spikes...

I would quit freaking out, if the car is boost limited to a certain mileage than more than likely if you are in turn creating more psi the turbo may whistle a tad bit more. IMHO that would be like me freaking out because my blower got louder.

I'm not freaking out i'm not that worried about it all I wanted to know is if it was normal. Besides its louder at lower boost to like around 3psi is where I usually play with it in the neighbor hood I will wind it up to 3psi and let off just because I like the sound of it.

Cat gets clogged from running too rich...has nothing to do with boost. The turbo is also much more efficient than the M62 on the ss/sc...16 psi is nothing for it, where 16 on the s/c really starts to heat things up.

I never said the cat got clogged because of the boost levels. I said the clogged cat caused the boost to spike...

When you change the intake, it gets louder.
