Rattles - one in particular

2008 Cobalt SS/TC....

This just MIGHT be the worst rattling car I've ever owned. I don't know, but it's right up there. Holy balls...
I located one noise. The front sway bar end links.
There's a noise in the back passenger side. At least I'm pretty sure it's that side of the car but definitely the back. I've been looking for weeks trying to figure what it is.
On the outside - It's loud as fuck. Sounds like a heat shield or something. Sounds like metal but it's caused by bumps in the road. For example if I'm going like 5 mph over the gravel driveway it's loud as hell. But I hear at speeds of like 30-35 too and in-between.

On the inside - Sounds muffled. Like a gentle clunking. Like someone on the outside just tapping with a rubber mallet. But still super annoying.

Rear of the car.... like I said.

Any thoughts or known issues that I'm missing?

Overall the thing rattles like a bitch. The rear deck rattles like hell, the front dash, the doors, the seats. It's insane. Thank goodness for the stereo but when I want to talk to my passenger it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I'd like to just rip the bitch apart and sound deaden EVERYTHING. I don't even give a shit about the added weight. If I had the money...

Thanks for any help.

Rattles are warranty, my rear decklid rattling like over every single bump, took it in and they fixed it and said one of the clips had come loose and was rattling and I havent heard it since. Its a cobalt so its going to rattle.

give it time. my rear deck rattled, sunroof rattled like crazy, the replaced it but its coming back, rear seat and thats just a few

ive had exhaust since my car was a few weeks old and just lowered it yesterday and so far nothing more/worst then it was before

Zander916 07-04-2010 05:55 PM

The only mod I have that could POSSIBLY be related is a catted downpipe from ZZP. I'm not lowered.

Also, warranty is out of the question. I just crossed 50K miles yesterday. lol The rattles really came on strong 40-45K miles... so uh.... good luck to you all.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I might check into the exhaust. I'm doubtful but ZZP does put a little weird curved tube for the O2 bung.

brickloaf 07-04-2010 05:59 PM

its your heat shield the same thing happened to me and one of the rivets came out and the mechanic put in some replacement but i just started hearing it again like 6 months later

mkulrey13 07-04-2010 06:07 PM

my 05 2.2 that was boosted did not rattle with 80k. my SS doesnt either. Guess im lucky :)

trey ss 07-04-2010 06:11 PM

the anchor flaps behind the rear seats rattled like crazy when i had the base up.. so i ghetto rigged it with some tape ;) but my door handle does sometimes lol

My SS has 14K miles and no Rattle's or wierd noises. I had a couple camaro's and those things rattled like you wouldnt believe.

cobasterd 07-04-2010 11:53 PM

My 09 SS just hit 2k and it has bad wind noises ever since day one. It has a sunroof and it is very loud when closed as well as a noise coming from the drivers door. I am very unhappy with that. Took it in for warranty at 600 miles and they said it was "normal" for a Cobalt.

Mine has some light rattles as well as sometimes can hear strut plates creek when turning steering wheel during parking lot manuvers.

This is the loudest car I have ever owned. My last daily driver was a Grand Prix GT that I bought brand new and in ten years put 200k on it. It was never as loud as this car is.

rattles are normal problem in most cobalts!

mkulrey13 07-05-2010 03:31 AM

I lawl who complain about these problems in a sub 25k econo car..come on now...

ace921000 07-05-2010 03:39 AM

every now and then my dash wil rattle but other than that i dont really have any rattles. i just wish there wasnt so much damn plastic in the car

SSlobalt 07-05-2010 03:47 AM

I think it's all a matter of how picky you are. The expectation of most is that the Cobalt is going to rattle, so most will find rattles.

blk06cbltss 07-05-2010 04:25 AM

the worst is when you close the trunk with a highrise haha

Go ahead... lawl.
My sub $25K Acura RSX-S? FAAAAAAAR less rattles. Almost zero.

My sub $25K '95 Grand Am before that? Perhaps the same or slightly less. But it was at 155K miles and 10 years old also.
...And I could go on. This car is 2 years old. I kind of figured they might have made progress.

BRHumbert 07-05-2010 06:38 AM

Only rattle to mention on my 08 SS/TC is the damn mirror. Every little vibration or bump and that thing rattles like crazy.

Your missing the point.. its not a lux. car. its a econo car..Also as mentioned you were lucky with your old cars as was I. My 05 never rattled or my SS now...same thing!

bobbyhill31286 07-05-2010 02:09 PM

most lower end chevys are bad with rattles...I look at it this way, if my balt starts to rattle like my work van then im F#CKED  otherwise, idc, it was BAD at one point but now its ok

I put double sided stick tape on all of those decklid clips on my car to stop it from rattling.

Ahhhhh... I think I might be getting some doublesided tape and sticky back velcro soon. I'll be taken shit apart and going that route I suppose.
The main rattle that this thread was about remains a mystery at the moment. I may just take everything in the trunk out and see if I find something loose.

The RSX was slow, though. :cssNET:
