Should I Buy an 08 Cobalt SS Turbocharged?

I have owned many Fords (Mach 1s, Cobras, Lightning, Saleens). I wanted to try something smaller and an entire new experience. I bought an 07 Honda Civic Si. Made a bunch of upgrades including brakes, rotors, wheels, tires, catback, intake, flashpro, .... you get the point. I sold the Si.

I found an 08 Turbocharged SS. They want 16k for it with 23k miles. It looks to be bone stock. What do you guys think? Should I pick it up or should I look for something different?

BPacak 04-20-2011 10:30 PM

yeah thats a good price for the miles. try 15.5 i bet they will take it haha

Gremlin85 04-20-2011 10:31 PM

Yes, excellent car for a a good price.

09CobaltSS1 04-20-2011 10:34 PM

these little things are a great bang for the buck.. especially when you wake them up with a solid tune and a few bolt-ons

TcKid631 04-20-2011 10:46 PM

What initial mods should I order? Intake, catback, and tune? I read there are two tuners to choose from right now...

Trifecta and HPT? Will an intake, catback, and tune get me to 300whp? Any other major bottlenecks to our cars and making 20+psi?

What's the G85 package?

bobbyhill31286 04-20-2011 10:53 PM

ummm, tune alone will get you 300 haha
catless downpipe instead of catback. catback will only change sound

What's the G85 package?

the 2 biggest bottlenecks to overcome are the downpipe and the air inlet tube that connects the airbox to the turbo. 2 ways to fix the inlet tube restriction are either with a cold air intake or the upgraded inlet tube from zzp. A catback quite honestly will net you very very little gain in the hp department with the stock turbo. Not really worth it from a performance standpoint, however the car sounds great with a nice full 3" exhaust system.. :twothumbs The biggest gainer as far as exhaust componants go would be a catless downpipe, however a spun metal cat will flow almost as well as catless and keep things emissions legal

with just a downpipe, cold air intake and a solid tune you can absolutely hit 300whp.. that's how I initially did it.. :)

see if it has a G85 option and then yes buy it.

Why does everyone make such a huge deal out of the G85 package? It doesn't make the car worthless without it. You're not gonna notice the difference THAT much unless you do some serious autocrossing or road racing. If he can't find anything else in that price range, still not a bad idea to go for it.

OP, don't be surprised if you run a carfax report on that car and see hail damage. A bunch of the 08s were hit with a hail storm while at the factory and were damaged, so they don't have paint warranty, but they were all fixed before shipped to dealers.

apicia 04-20-2011 11:06 PM

Ok, I am going for it. I will get a downpipe with spun metal cat, intake, and a tune. 300whp should be fun..... for a little while ;)

Bye bye, Civic Si.

Which intake and spun metal downpipe?

SuperChargedMA 04-20-2011 11:06 PM

You should. Because youre from MA and its almost summer so you can come out for some meets :twothumbs

Boogie_69 04-20-2011 11:12 PM

IMO, the car is worthless without the limited slip, and I don't get why Chevy even offered it without one. My '03 SRT4 (stage 1, all else stock) was worthless at anything under 70mph, if the steering wheel was turned the slightest bit the inside tire would engulf in smoke. Amusing for a while, but it gets old. Plus, with how many of these cars are out there, there is no reason to purchase the half of a performance car a non-G85 SS is.

apicia 04-21-2011 12:40 AM

I hope she is a G85 optioned SS.

evil 2.0 04-21-2011 01:14 AM

it will be ok if its not a g85 car , i also have had firebirds and a gto . it is a total different experience in these cars . I love my ss . It is a blast every time i drive go for it and post pics .
