What Oil do YOU use?
#17
Used Mobil 1 for about 60,000 miles or so and then was on Pennzoil Ultra for the next 10,000. The Ultra helped quiet down my valvetrain a lot initially, but it then tended to break down very quickly. I was interested in trying that new Royal Purple HPS.
At the MPx meet recently, an engineer that had helped work on both Dodge and a few GM projects recommended trying Mobil 1 High Mileage, due to the higher ZDDP content. He wanted to recommend Royal Purple and a few others, but said that Royal Purple, despite advertising increased ZDDP, didn't have a quality check on the tanks to ensure that the ratios remained within tolerance, and the other brands wouldn't release their formulation stats. In a nutshell, ZDDP helps the oil stick to the engine internals, providing better protection. Some older engines (such as flat tappet) will be quickly destroyed without the higher ZDDP content, and it is recommended for racing applications as well.
Many newer oil formulations, including the current Mobil 1, have decreased the ZDDP content in engines, sacrificing engine longevity for emissions/economy benefits. Some Euro brands/formulations have not followed suit as they generally still put more weight on engine longevity.
