Question Why would a new wheel have a core charge ?

Both GM Parts Direct Lookie Here AND my dealer are quoting a $50.00 core charge.

It's a new wheel - WTF is this core charge crapola ?

That's supposed to be for remanned items - I am lost.

I wonder if the dealer is looking at the same source, which makes no sense - why not get one from GM ?

If anybody has any ideas as to why the 'core' charge I'd love to hear it.

Thanks !

its probably so if the dealer orders a wheel, especially under warranty, the system encourages them to return the original wheel.

Or if your wheel only has a little curbing or something, they can fix it and resell it.

i had to get a new rim and it worked out to be worthwhile to send the damaged one back and i was refunded the core charge. i'm sure they sold it to a refinisher or something.

This is exactly what I heard. I needed a new wheel about a year ago and when I called the distribution center this is what they told me.

I had a wheel replaced at the dealer about a year ago.. - there was a core charge on the receipt (which was a +50 -50 charge since they had the old wheel there)

The dealer curbed one of my wheels the 2nd week I had the car and and they tried to refinish the wheel and I said *insert bad words here* lol. They ordered me a new wheel and told me to return the old one when I get them swapped as there was a core charge of $50 on the wheel. The rash was very minor and I paid them $50 and kept the wheel lol. The "new" wheel had some rubber on the inner lip so it was obviously mounted before. Either they sell refurbs for warranty OR you get refurbs as new wheels. Check that wheel when you get it.

I am in a similar situation except it looked like the wheel was dropped against a lift arm - a small gouge on on of the spokes and a little divot in the outside lip.

They offered to have it refinished, so I took it off and took it to the place they recommended - it turned out OK, but you can tell it is just not quite the same .

So, now I am going to get a new wheel, and keep that one as a spare. They have been nothing but nice as far as working w/ me, and my wife thinks I am nuts for buying a new wheel , but I can tell the difference, and I am the one that drives the car/washes it/has to look at the dam thing and be disgusted .

I am waiting to hear if that Finish Line Wheel place has these in stock, and whether or not they are OEM or repros - I'll let all here know what they say. If they are OEM and clean then for $ 189.00 they are a bargain. If they are repros and they do a good job then they are not bad, but still not OEM.

I am a dealer and GM started charging us the core charge in January 2007. Sorry, but the General charges us for it!

These are not anyone I have dealt with - just a company I stumbled across online while looking at factory wheel prices.

(Survey says - HIGH ! as some of you already know . )

According to the contact at Finish Line, these are reconditioned OEM rims that have been clear coated.

They do not have any in stock now, so it looks like I am going OEM for the time being.

But, they are offering these for a fair price - see here.

Hopefully this will help someone out down the road.

Where did you see $ 320.00 ?

Comapred to what GM Parts Direct/the Dealers want, that's still reasonable. I noticed this morning that the guy selling 4 wheels here got $625.00 for 4 used ones, and they disappeared in a heartbeat !

Sorry I did not get online last night - dammit.

That was a good deal, and I would have worked a split w/ the other H-Towner to get 2 of 'em
