Catch can project

I decided to get an air oil separator since I get a small amount of blowby. Never seen the inside of the MPx, and I don't like any of the crappy generic ones that have poor/no media, bad filtering, bad design, etc.

I boiled my choices down to Conceptual Polymer's a/o separator or Moroso's. Moroso's is more like a catch can than a separator, but they call it a separator. Anyways, I decided on the Moroso, since it was shorter, and it came with a bracket.

Disassembled, you can see that it has a divided wall between inlet and outlet, and a nice stainless net rolled up as the media. This stuff won't break off like steel wool would. To be safe though, I ran a lot of very hot water through both sides.

Here it is assembled. The drain valve adds a significant amount of height. I may reduce that by using a different setup.

So it's probably hard to see what's going on with the next picture, but basically, I took a right angle aluminum stock, and cut it to about 7.5" and drilled holes to fit the bracket that came with the catch can, and the 2 bolts that stick up. Finally, I had to rotate my K&N a little bit. I normally keep the metal part facing straight down, but I had to adjust it so that I would have room for the catch can.

More pics when I have it hooked up later this week. I'll have to tackle that damn valve cover line. Leaning towards cutting with a dremel.

Evidence that it works. This is a one off clear plastic version that Moroso made for documentation:

The stainless net comes with the can. There are 2, one for each side of the divider. You can get these from Amazon or a number of places. They have different versions with special brackets for cars. I got the universal one.

So, something else to note, especially for the K&N intake users. I suspect the hose running from the valve cover to the intake is NOT angled enough into the air stream to keep the check valve from opening. The result is that oil vapors are getting pulled into the intake from the valve cover. This should not be the case if the hose fitting is angled into the air stream properly.

I'm not sure if the barb extends in past the metal intake. If it does, I may cut it at an angle so that it can catch more air. This connection should NOT require a catch can, due to the built in check valve.

Word on the street is that you can cut zip ties and wedge them underneath each of the barbs that hold that dang valve cover line connection on. A few people have seemed to have success doing it.

I may try it myself, so I can finally install this MPx I've had for a while now.

I have a hard time believing that method will work to disengage all 4 clips. Maybe some of them, but not all.

Did you ever look at the one by Elite Engineering, by any chance? They market it for Vettes, but a separator is a separator. The only difference is the bracket.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this done firsthand, I had my doubts too lol.

Yes, I came across it, and it's not as well engineered as the Moroso. The gasses can go straight from the inlet, through less mesh, and right out. In the Moroso, it has to pass through one side, hit the divider, and go down into the catch area, and then travel back up through more media before it exits the can.

Very interested in this, just put on my k&n on Sunday and noticed the oil at the turbo inlet and was a bit worried. How is the fitment with the valve on the bottom?

Worked for me! Use as thick a tie wrap as you can wedge in there. the trick is figuring out first where the tabs are oriented. I don't know how I would have gotten the line off the turbo connection otherwise.

Did you notice any ill effects from rotating your K&N filter, fuel trim wise? Many ppl swear it makes a difference.

Doesn't matter to me. I'll just adjust my fuel trims if they are off.

Forgot to comment on this. That may fly for the one on the turbo, but there's no way for the one on the valve cover. I just cut it with a dremel, and popped the entire hose out of the turbo, like your pic, and cut the hose from the end with the dremel. Much easier.

I did actually try the zip ties for all of 2 minutes before throwing them away.

Added bonus, it will be MUCH easier now to replace my valve cover with a powder coated one

This is from a single track day. I emptied it after each session. I'm going to pull my valve cover off soon to see if I have a broken lash adjuster, which is causing additional issues.

20 ounce drink bottle.

There is an OCC that ddmworks offers for the LNF kappa. It has a bracket for a 10mm you can fix somewhere in your engine bay. Well made
