Engine Removal

I know "Use the search"
Well I did, and didn't really see anything that stuck out.
Can you remove the engine from the top, or is it strictly a sub drop?

redcobalt07 Aug 6, 2013 06:33 PM

why couldn't you remove it from the top

Every where I have read says drop the sub frame, and all the tech's I have talked to as well.
There isn't much room it seems to pull it out the top...

redcobalt07 Aug 6, 2013 06:45 PM

Well can you not drop the subframe? If that is the way people say to do it that way then do it that way.

I can drop the subframe if I have to, but if I can pull it out of the top that makes it easier and cheaper for me, I can pull it out in my drive way as opposed to renting garage space.

Dropping the motor out the bottom is stupid easy to do that's the way I'll do it every time no matter what.

Doing it in a driveway isn't easy though.
I have acess to a garage but gotta pay rental space.
If that's the easiest way then I guess I'll just pay up and do it that way.

Lol don't be a dick if your not gonna provide any useful information.

Yes you can but you gotta pull the engine/trans all in one. Honestly with jack stands and some way to really lift the front of the car high its wayyyy easier than pulling from the top.

phatnackySS Aug 6, 2013 06:54 PM

Im sure you can pull it from the top, but it would be a pain in the ass. My guess is you will have to take exhaust off ,drop the tranny, maybe the intake.

Easiest is the drop it from the bottom. once the engine is on the ground use your hoist to lift the car.Helps to drop the engine on a skid or something with wheels. that way you don't have to move the car much.

That is the answer I was looking for....Thank you.
I'll probably just rent a garage space and do it that way.
I know a few places that might be willing.
I blew my LNF and looking around I might get another LNF or something different....

redcobalt07 Aug 6, 2013 07:03 PM

I would also pull from the top if possible.

Omiotek Aug 6, 2013 07:12 PM

its easier to go out the bottom./

ingram57 Aug 6, 2013 08:51 PM

Pull intake exhaust manifold and balancer and tensioner and altanator and ac compresser and a couple other Lil things and it comes out the top with trans connected I can do it in like 3 hours easy I've done 3 times lol

09CobaltSS1 Aug 6, 2013 09:00 PM

Absolutely drop it out the bottom.

Undo sway bar end links, tie rods, lower ball joints, axle nuts and the 4 bolts that retain the subframe and it drops right out. There's obviously quite a few connectors and miscellaneous stuff that needs to be removed as well, but it's far easier to drop the drive line out of the bottom as an assembly than to pull the engine by itself from the top.

How did you blow your engine btw?

Fastgti69 Aug 6, 2013 09:33 PM

Sub'd. I'm doing this next week and wanna know tips and tricks.

Sunburst_SS Aug 6, 2013 09:42 PM

you can pull it out the top....I've done several automatic cobalts this way. A manual will be a little tighter due to the trans output shaft. But if you pull the harmonic balancer and stuff of the front of the engine, it should come out pretty easy.

ItalianJoe1 Aug 6, 2013 09:43 PM

On the ground, if you have a good floor jack, big jack stands, and an engine hoist, is no biggie. I've done several in my driveway from the bottom. Once you have the engine loose, lower it onto a little cart under the car. Then use your jack (I put a piece of 2x8 board across the center tunnel, on the two rails, and lift there) to raise the car way, way up. Then slide the engine out from the pass side wheel well. If you remove the strut there's tons of space.

SalvageBaltSS Aug 6, 2013 09:52 PM

Im changing my tranny with jacks, and stands, a couple more bolts here and there, and I would have had my motor out also. I say just drop the subframe. You will need the front end, about 3 feet high, if you could get a lift to rent, that's a lot easier lol
