How to change LNF Transmission Fluid?
 

I have an 08 cobalt turbo. Its got 43,000 miles on it now and I was planning on changing the transmission fluid soon. Also what transmission fluid would you reccomend? Anyone who has done this or any step by step how to's with pictures?

Should just be two plugs on the side of the tranny. An upper one(for filling) and a lower one (for draining)

i plan on doing this same thing this weekend. I bought 2 quarts of this.
Red Line - Redline MT-90 Manual Trans Fluid #RDL-50304

Only use gm fluid or the corrent redline mtf. no other fluid should be used in the lnf

yah get the gl-40 GM oil. i did mine at 60k miles and it felt so nice.

Why u guys changing ur tranny fluid? U shouldn't ever have to change it, but if u want to why after only that many Kms? Manual trans there is no need to change it otherwise they would make a easy to access filler port.

Thanks for the posts. I just feel the transmission fluid has been in there for 4 years going on 5 and if I was a transmission I would want fresh fluid. Specially in a performance car such as the Cobalt SS Turbo!

This is on the drivers side of the tranny. The red arrow is the drain plug, and the green arrow is the filler plug.

Very helpful picture. So I hear people buying 2 quarts of the transmission fluid (OEM part # 88862472) but it only takes about 1.7 quarts. I feel however how much fluid comes out of the transmission, I would put that same amount back in. I also see other posts of people saying to take the drain plug out, let all the fluid drain out, then fill it till it starts leaking out of the drain plug. I thought you would have to fill it past the drain plug or how would it drain in the first place....?

you fill until it comes out the filler hole, not the drain hole haha.

Oh got ya! Would it make a difference if the car is on jack stands and not a lift?

The service manual says to also coat the threads of the plugs with high temp thread sealant. Tighten to 37 ft-lbs. I'm changing mine this week because the retarded dealership used the wrong oil in mine and it shifts like shit.

Just changed mine. It is easier than changing the engine oil on an SS/SC because of where the oil filter is, haha.

What have you guys been using to put in the new fluid? I am planning on doing this soon and the fill port is in such a tight area.

I use a pump that is made to pump oil into a boat lower unit.

I use one of those cheap $2 funnels and a 3' section of clear hose (I wanna say its 3/8" ID). Can obtain both at Menards or any worth while hardware store.

Does the service manual say anything about having the trans temp at normal operating temperature? I've heard of lots of "fill-for-life" auto trans' requiring that, such as the auto Cobalt.
